About AQA A Level
AQA A Level is a two-year qualification, graded A* to E, with all the exams at the end. It is the level that carries a whole subject, rather than the half-subject the AS covers. We tutor 14 AQA A Level subjects.
A Level does not have one house shape. Eight subjects sit three papers of 2 hours: Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Sociology, Psychology and Business. Five sit two papers at 40% each and add a project worth 20%: Computer Science, English Language, English Literature, Geography and History. Accounting sits on its own with two papers of 3 hours at half the marks each. Which of those three your child is on changes how the two years should be planned.
The project is the part parents ask about most. On all five subjects it is marked by teachers and moderated by AQA, and it is worth 20% of the whole grade. Biology, Chemistry and Physics work differently: 12 required practicals each, examined inside the written papers, with the practical endorsement reported separately from the grade. We plan around the shape your child is on, whether that shape includes a project, practicals or neither.

Teaching the Right Shape
AQA A Level splits into three structures: three papers of 2 hours, two papers plus a 20% project, or two papers of 3 hours for Accounting. We teach the structure your child is assessed by, because the revision plan depends on it.
The 20% Project
Five subjects carry a project worth a fifth of the grade. It is marked by teachers and moderated by AQA, and it rewards planning across two years rather than a last minute rush.
12 Required Practicals
Biology, Chemistry and Physics each carry 12 required practicals, and the practical endorsement is reported separately from the grade. Questions on that work appear inside the written papers.
On-Screen Programming
AQA A Level Computer Science Paper 1 is a 2 hour 30 minute on-screen exam, and AQA issues preliminary material, a skeleton program and test data beforehand. We prepare for the format as well as the content.
Optional Topics
Physics Paper 3 asks students to choose one of five optional topics, and History, Geography, Psychology and Sociology each ask for a topic choice too. The wrong choice is hard to unpick in Year 13.
