About AQA A Level English Language
AQA A Level English Language is code 7702, with a DfE discount code of 5030 and an accreditation number of 601/4640/0. It has two written papers and one non-exam assessment. Both papers last 2 hours 30 minutes and carry 100 marks, worth 40% of the A-level each. The non-exam assessment, called Language in Action, is 3,500 words and 100 marks, worth 20%. The A Level is graded on a six point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.
All three components carry 100 raw marks, but they are not equally weighted. Both papers are scaled by a factor of two, giving a maximum scaled mark of 200 each, while the non-exam assessment is scaled by one, giving 100. The total scaled mark is 500. So a student who assumes the three are equal because each says 100 marks will misjudge where the qualification sits, and the coursework is a fifth of the grade rather than a third.
The coursework is divided into two named tasks. AQA asks for a language investigation of 2,000 words excluding data, and a piece of original writing and commentary of 1,500 words total. The two add to exactly 3,500. The work is assessed by teachers and moderated by AQA, and it is the only part of the qualification where creative use of English carries substantial marks, because AO5 is worth 10% overall and six of those ten sit in the coursework.
The papers test different things from each other. Paper 1 covers textual variations and representations, comparing a contemporary text with an older one, and then children's language development from 0 to 11 years. Paper 2 covers language diversity and change, where students choose between an essay on diversity and an essay on change, and then language discourses, which is 70 of the 100 marks.
