About AQA A Level Sociology
AQA A Level Sociology is code 7192, with a DfE discount code of 4890 and a QAN of 601/3994/8. It is linear and entirely examined: three written papers of 2 hours each, each carrying 80 marks and each worth 33.3% of the A-level, so there is no coursework. The A Level is graded on a six-point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.
The three papers are not interchangeable. Paper 1 is Education with Theory and Methods and is wholly compulsory, covering content 4.1.1, 4.1.2 and 4.1.3. Paper 3 is Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods, also wholly compulsory, covering content 4.3.1 and 4.3.2. Paper 2 is Topics in Sociology and is the only paper in the qualification with no compulsory content: a student answers one topic from each of two option groups.
Paper 2 is also the only paper made entirely of extended writing. Section A is 40 marks and Section B is 40 marks, both described in the assessment outline as extended writing alone. By contrast Paper 1 carries short answer and extended writing for its 50 mark Education section, and Paper 3 does the same for its 50 mark Crime and Deviance section, so Paper 2 is where an essay-only student is comfortable and where a short-answer student is exposed.
Theory and Methods appears on two papers at very different weights. On Paper 1 it is 10 marks, the smallest block in the qualification. On Paper 3 it is 30 marks, three times as much, and it sits beside Crime and Deviance at 50 marks. Methods in Context is a separate 20 mark block on Paper 1. A student who treats the theory content as a single topic will misjudge how much of it is worth.
The objective weighting is the most unusual feature of this specification. AO1, knowledge and understanding, is 44% overall. AO2 is 31% and AO3, analysis and evaluation, is 25%. Demonstrating secure knowledge is therefore worth nearly twice as much as evaluating, which is the opposite of what many students assume about essay subjects. AQA A Level Sociology: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 7192 specification.
AQA
AQA's A Level Sociology is code 7192, three written papers of 2 hours and 80 marks each at 33.3%. Paper 2 is built entirely from optional topics and extended writing, and AO1 carries 44% of the marks.
How Centaurus Helps AQA A Level Sociology Students Excel
Knowledge Marked First
AO1 is 44% of the qualification, so theories, studies and concepts are checked for accuracy before evaluation is layered on.
Two Options Chosen Early
Paper 2 draws on two option groups of four topics each, so the pair is settled before teaching begins rather than left to the second year.
Essay-Only Paper 2
Both Paper 2 sections are 40 marks of extended writing with no short answer, so essay timing is practised as its own skill.
Theory and Methods Weighted Correctly
10 marks on Paper 1 against 30 marks on Paper 3, so the content is taught to the larger weight and revised to the smaller one.
Three Objectives Tracked
Marks are tracked against 44, 31 and 25 rather than as one total, so a student who evaluates well but states facts loosely is identified early.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
