About AQA A Level Chemistry
AQA A Level Chemistry is code 7405, with a DfE discount code of 1110 and an accreditation number of 601/5731/8. It has three papers, all 2 hours long. Paper 1 carries 105 marks and 35% of the A-level, Paper 2 carries 105 marks and 35%, and Paper 3 carries 90 marks and 30%. All three are scaled at one, giving a total scaled mark of 300, and the A Level is graded on a six point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.
Paper 1 is the inorganic paper and Paper 2 is the organic paper. Paper 1 assesses relevant physical chemistry from sections 3.1.1 to 3.1.4, 3.1.6 to 3.1.8 and 3.1.10 to 3.1.12, plus the whole of inorganic chemistry in section 3.2. Paper 2 assesses relevant physical chemistry from sections 3.1.2 to 3.1.6 and 3.1.9, plus the whole of organic chemistry in section 3.3. Both include relevant practical skills.
Reading those two lists against each other produces a surprise. Amount of substance, bonding, energetics and equilibria appear on both papers. But kinetics, section 3.1.5, and rate equations, section 3.1.9, appear on Paper 2 only, while atomic structure, redox, thermodynamics, Kp, electrode potentials and acids and bases appear on Paper 1 only. So both rate topics are examined on the organic paper and on nothing else.
Paper 3 assesses any content and any practical skills. It has 40 marks of questions on practical techniques and data analysis, 20 marks testing across the specification, and 30 marks of multiple choice questions. Those 30 marks are the only multiple choice in the qualification, because Papers 1 and 2 are entirely short and long answer.
