About AQA A Level Physics
AQA A Level Physics is code 7408 with an option letter, with a DfE discount code of 1210 and an accreditation number of 601/4747/7. It has three papers, all 2 hours long. Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry 85 marks and 34% of the A-level each, and Paper 3 carries 80 marks and 32%. All are scaled at one, giving a total scaled mark of 250, and the A Level is graded on a six point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.
Paper 3 is the paper that contains a choice. Section A is compulsory and covers practical skills and data analysis for 45 marks. Section B is an optional topic, and students enter for one of five, which are astrophysics, medical physics, engineering physics, turning points in physics, or electronics, for 35 marks. The five options are numbered 9 to 13 in the specification and all are marked A-level only. AQA lists Section A and Section B as separate rows in the scaling table.
The content of the first two papers is not simply divided in half. Paper 1 assesses sections 1 to 5 and 6.1, which is periodic motion. Paper 2 assesses sections 6.2 thermal physics, 7 and 8, and also states that knowledge from sections 1 to 6.1 is assumed. So the early sections are needed for both papers, once directly and once as assumed knowledge. Both papers contain 60 marks of written answers and 25 multiple choice questions, while Paper 3 has no multiple choice at all.
Two large floors are printed. Forty per cent of the overall assessment will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above, applied in the context of physics and at least to the standard of higher tier GCSE Mathematics. At least 15 per cent will assess knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to practical work. Students must also carry out the 12 required practicals, and a separate endorsement of practical skills is taken alongside the A Level, with AQA stating that grades are based only on marks from written exams. Who AQA A Level Physics Is For
This course suits Year 13 students sitting AQA A Level Physics 7408 who need the core sections kept live for both papers and the optional topic in Paper 3 Section B prepared properly.
- Year 13 students sitting AQA A Level Physics 7408 at the end of the year
- Students who do not yet know which of the five options their school has entered
- Students who drop sections 1 to 6.1 after Paper 1, when Paper 2 assumes them
- Students losing marks on the 40% of the assessment that requires mathematical skills
- Private candidates, who can enter this specification but must be based in the UK

AQA A Level Physics: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 7408 specification.
AQA
AQA's A Level Physics is code 7408 with an option letter. Three 2 hour papers, with Paper 3 split into 45 marks of practical and data analysis and 35 marks on one of five options: astrophysics, medical physics, engineering physics, turning points or electronics.
How Centaurus Helps AQA A Level Physics Students Excel
The Option Chosen Deliberately
Paper 3 Section B is one of five options and the entry code carries it, so the choice is discussed with the family before the entry is submitted.
Section A and Section B Taught Apart
Practical skills and data analysis is 45 marks and the option is 35, and AQA scales them separately, so each is planned as its own component.
Assumed Knowledge Kept Live
Paper 2 states that knowledge from sections 1 to 6.1 is assumed, so the early sections are revisited rather than retired after Paper 1 practice.
Objective Shift Targeted
AO2 reaches 53 on Paper 2 while AO3 falls to 15 there and rises to 32 on Paper 3, so each paper is prepared for the objectives it rewards.
The 40% Maths Demand
Two fifths of the marks require mathematical skills at Level 2 or above, so rearranging, units, prefixes, standard form and graphs are drilled as content.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
