About AQA A Level Economics
AQA A Level Economics is code 7136, with a DfE discount code of 4410 and an accreditation number of 601/4371/X. It has three papers, all 2 hours long and all carrying 80 marks, each worth 33.3% of the A-level and each scaled at one. The A Level is graded on a six point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E, and it is linear, so all three papers are sat at the end.
Papers 1 and 2 are built the same way. Paper 1 assesses content 1 to 8 and covers markets and market failure, while Paper 2 assesses content 9 to 14 and covers the national and international economy. Each has Section A, a data response question with a choice of one from two contexts worth 40 marks, and Section B, essay questions with a choice of one from three worth 40 marks. Apart from the content, the two descriptions are identical.
Paper 3 is Economic principles and issues, and it is a different kind of paper. It assesses all content from 1 to 14, so it is the only synoptic paper, and it contains Section A, multiple choice questions worth 30 marks, and Section B, case study questions requiring written answers worth 50 marks. There is no essay on Paper 3, and there is no multiple choice on Papers 1 and 2. So every multiple choice mark in the qualification is in that one paper.
The objectives are printed as ranges, and knowledge is the smallest of them. AO1 is 20 to 23 per cent overall, while AO2 and AO3 are tied at 26 to 29 per cent and AO4 is 22 to 25 per cent. On Paper 3, AO1 rises to 7 to 10 and AO3 falls to 6 to 9, so the synoptic paper leans towards knowledge and application rather than analysis.
