About AQA A Level Psychology

AQA A Level Psychology is code 7182, with a DfE discount code of 4850 and a QAN of 601/4838/X. It is linear and wholly examined: three written papers of 2 hours each, each carrying 96 marks and each worth 33.3% of the A-level, so there is no coursework and no practical endorsement to complete. The A Level is graded on a six-point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.

The three papers divide the content cleanly. Paper 1 is Introductory Topics in Psychology and assesses compulsory content 1 to 4. Paper 2 is Psychology in Context and assesses compulsory content 5 to 7. Paper 3 is Issues and Options in Psychology, and it is the only paper with choice: content 8 is compulsory, and students then answer one topic from each of three option groups, which together offer nine optional topics.

The section structure differs between papers and matters. Paper 1 and Paper 3 have four sections of 24 marks each. Paper 2 has three sections, two of 24 marks and a third of 48 marks, so its final section alone carries half of that paper. Every section is described as multiple choice, short answer and extended writing.

AQA sets two coverage rules across the whole qualification. At least 10% of the overall assessment will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above, and at least 25 to 30% will assess skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to research methods. Research methods is therefore not one topic among many, it is a thread that runs through every paper. If you want to see how A Level Psychology compares across boards, that page sets them side by side.

This version of the specification applies to AS and A-level exams from June 2026 onwards and is dated 1 September 2025. The content for item 4 was retitled to Clinical Psychology and Mental Health, so a student working from an older copy will be looking for a topic name that no longer exists.

How Centaurus Helps AQA A Level Psychology Students Excel

Paper 2 Section C Isolated

One section of Paper 2 is worth 48 marks while every other section in the qualification is 24, so that section gets its own preparation.

Option Choices Made Deliberately

Nine optional topics sit in three groups of three, so the choice is planned against strengths rather than taken from whichever topic looks easiest.

Research Methods as a Thread

AQA requires 25 to 30% of the assessment to cover research methods, so it is built into every paper rather than taught as a single topic.

The Maths Requirement Timed

At least 10% of the assessment uses mathematical skills at Level 2 or above, so those questions are practised to time and marked.

Current Topic Names

The specification dated 1 September 2025 renames compulsory content 4, so all teaching follows the current names rather than an older copy.

24/7 Progress Reporting

Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
