About AQA A Level Geography

AQA A Level Geography is code 7037, the specification written for teaching from September 2016 and for A Level exams from 2018 onwards. It has two written papers and one non-exam assessment. Component 1 is Physical geography and Component 2 is Human geography, each a 2 hour 30 minute exam of 120 marks worth 40% of the A-level. Component 3 is the Geography fieldwork investigation, 60 marks and 20%. The A Level is graded on a six-point scale of A star, A, B, C, D and E.

This version of the specification does not print a qualification accreditation number. It states that the Ofqual qualification accreditation number is to be confirmed, so no QAN is quoted on this page. That is not a detail to guess at, and anyone comparing specifications should check the current version rather than borrow a number from an older document.

Both written papers share the same shape. Section A is compulsory and worth 36 marks, Section B is worth 36 marks, and Section C is worth 48 marks. On Component 1, Section A is Water and carbon cycles, Section B is one of hot desert, coastal or glacial systems and landscapes, and Section C is either Hazards or Ecosystems under stress. On Component 2, Section A is Global systems and global governance, Section B is Changing places, and Section C is one of contemporary urban environments, population and the environment, or resource security.

The largest single answer on each paper is therefore 48 marks, and it is a choice. Two of Component 1's three sections involve choosing a topic and one of Component 2's does, so the optional content is not a garnish: it accounts for 48 of the 120 marks on each paper, which is 40% of that paper.

The investigation is where the objectives invert. Overall AO1 is 30 to 40% and AO3 is 20 to 30%, but on Component 3 the split is AO1 zero, AO2 two and AO3 eighteen. The 60 mark investigation carries no knowledge marks at all. AQA also requires four days of fieldwork during the course in relation to processes in both physical and human geography, and schools must submit a fieldwork statement confirming it by 15 May in the year of entry. How Centaurus Helps AQA A Level Geography Students Excel

The 48 Mark Option Sections

Each paper's Section C is 48 marks of optional content, so the chosen topics are settled before teaching rather than in the final term.

The Investigation Marked as AO3

Component 3 scores AO1 at zero and AO3 at eighteen, so the investigation is prepared as analysis and evaluation rather than as a knowledge essay.

Fieldwork Statement Tracked

Four days of fieldwork are required and a statement must be submitted by 15 May in the year of entry, so the days are logged rather than remembered.

Section B Choices Weighed

Component 1 offers one of three landscapes in Section B and one of two topics in Section C, so the pair is chosen against a student's strengths.

Both Papers Timed to Full Length

Two long papers of 2 hours 30 minutes with a 48 mark finish, so stamina and timing are practised under real conditions.

24/7 Progress Reporting

Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
