About AQA AS Level Sociology
AQA AS Level Sociology is code 7191, with a DfE discount code of 4890 and an accreditation number of 601/3995/X. It has two papers, both 1 hour 30 minutes long and both carrying 60 marks, worth 50% of the AS level each. Only one section in the whole qualification is purely extended writing, and only one topic is chosen by the school. The AS is graded on a five point scale of A, B, C, D and E.
Paper 1 is Education with Methods in Context and assesses compulsory content 3.1.1 and 3.1.2. The Education section is short answer and extended writing worth 40 marks, and the Methods in Context section is extended writing worth 20 marks. Paper 2 is Research Methods and Topics in Sociology. Section A is compulsory content 3.2.1, Research Methods, worth 20 marks, and Section B is one topic chosen from 3.2.2, worth 40 marks.
So both papers split into a 40 mark block and a 20 mark block, but never the same way round. Paper 1 puts the larger share on Education, and Paper 2 puts the larger share on the chosen topic. Methods in Context is the only section on either paper described purely as extended writing, with no short answer component, which makes it the hardest place to gather quick marks.
The assessment objectives are dominated by knowledge. AO1 is 46% overall, AO2 is 31% and AO3 is 23%, so accurate and well informed sociological knowledge carries almost half the qualification while analysis and evaluation carry less than a quarter. The optional topic is chosen from four: Culture and Identity, Families and Households, Health, or Work, Poverty and Welfare. AQA AS Level Sociology: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 7191 specification.
AQA
AQA's AS Level Sociology is code 7191: two 60 mark papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each. Paper 1 is Education at 40 marks plus Methods in Context at 20. Paper 2 is Research Methods at 20 plus one chosen topic at 40, from four options.
How Centaurus Helps AQA AS Level Sociology Students Excel
The 40 and 20 Split Understood
Each paper gives 40 marks to one block and 20 to another, but never the same way round, so revision time is allocated to match where the marks actually sit.
The Chosen Topic Taught Properly
Forty marks on Paper 2 rest on one topic chosen from four, so the school's choice is confirmed early and taught to the depth that weighting demands.
Methods in Context as Writing
It is the only section on either paper that is purely extended writing, so it is practised as sustained argument with no short answer marks to fall back on.
AO1 at 46 Per Cent Targeted
Knowledge and understanding carries almost half the qualification, so studies, concepts and terminology are learned precisely rather than glossed over.
Pace Set for 60 Marks
Both papers carry 60 marks in 1 hour 30 minutes, which is a different pace from most subjects in this group, so practice papers are timed accordingly.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
