About AS Level Sociology
AS Level Sociology is the first year of A Level Sociology, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It covers how society shapes people and how people shape society: education, families, identity, and the methods researchers use to study them. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
Sociology marks come from written answers, so the skill is arguing well with evidence. A strong answer names a theorist, explains their view, weighs it against a rival view, and reaches a judgement. Students who describe theories without comparing them, or who forget the evidence, lose marks on every essay.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we mark essays the way an examiner would, including the mark scheme wording. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all year.

AS Level Sociology Exam Boards We Cover
Three boards set AS Sociology, and they differ more than most subjects. AQA lets students choose which topic to study; Cambridge and OxfordAQA fix the topics, and both examine research methods in every paper. Edexcel does not offer Sociology at AS or A Level. All three are exam-only, so every mark comes from written papers.
AQA
Two papers, each a 1 hour 30 minute written exam worth 60 marks and 50% of the AS. Paper 1 is Education with Methods in Context: Education carries 40 marks of short answer and extended writing, and Methods in Context carries a 20-mark extended writing question. Paper 2 is Research Methods and Topics in Sociology: Section A is compulsory research methods worth 20 marks, and Section B is one topic worth 40 marks. AQA is the only board here that lets students choose a topic, from four: Culture and Identity, Families and Households, Health, or Work, Poverty and Welfare. The A-level topic list is twice as long, so the AS choice is narrower.
Cambridge
Two compulsory papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks and 50% of the AS. Paper 1 is Socialisation, Identity and Methods of Research; Paper 2 is The Family. Both follow the same shape: students answer four questions in total, three compulsory short questions in Section A, then one essay worth 26 marks from a choice of two in Section B. The topics are fixed, so nobody can avoid the family or the methods content. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India. A-level students take two more papers: Education, and Globalisation, Media and Religion.
OxfordAQA
The newest of the three: the first International AS exams are in May/June 2027, so this year's Year 12 is the first cohort. Two units, each a 1 hour 45 minute exam worth 60 marks and 50% of the AS. Unit 1 is Introducing Sociology, covering families plus research methods and theory. Unit 2 is Exploring Sociology, covering socialisation and social control plus research methods and theory. Both units have the same shape: Section A carries 40 marks on the main topic, and Section B carries 20 marks on research methods. Exams run in May/June and January, and students can resit a unit as many times as they need, with the best result counting.
