About A Level Sociology
A Level Sociology is the qualification students sit in their final year of school. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12 or Upper Sixth. It suits anyone heading for sociology, criminology, law or social policy degrees. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is the depth of the argument. A Level asks students to weigh up competing theories, not describe a single one. Marks come from how well they use evidence to back a claim, and how well they judge the strengths and limits of each view. Research methods carry their own marks on both boards.

A Level Sociology Exam Boards We Cover
AQA is the UK board, with three papers taken at the end of the two years. Cambridge International follows its own syllabus, with four papers and more exam series. Neither board sets coursework, so every mark comes from the exams. Edexcel does not offer A Level Sociology.
AQA
Three papers, each 2 hours and 80 marks, worth 33.3% each. Paper 1 covers Education with Theory and Methods. Paper 2 covers Topics in Sociology, where students pick one topic from each of two lists. Paper 3 covers Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods. The AS is separate: two papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks each.
Cambridge
Four papers and no coursework. Papers 1 and 2 make up the AS: Socialisation, Identity and Methods of Research, then The Family, both 1 hour 30 minutes and 60 marks. Paper 3 is Education, 1 hour 15 minutes and 50 marks. Paper 4 covers Globalisation, Media and Religion, and students answer on at least two of the three topics in 1 hour 45 minutes. Exams run in June and November.
