About A Level Geography
A Level Geography is the qualification students sit in their final year of school. It suits anyone heading for geography, environmental science, geology, urban planning or international development degrees. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is the depth of the examples. A Level answers need named, located case studies, with real figures and dates. Students also have to evaluate, which means weighing up costs and benefits and reaching a judgement rather than describing. The long questions carry heavy marks, so structure matters as much as knowledge.

A Level Geography Exam Boards We Cover
Geography A Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the exams come at the end of the two years. Cambridge International and OxfordAQA follow their own international syllabuses, with exams in more series. One big difference is fieldwork. AQA, Edexcel and OxfordAQA all assess it. Cambridge does not.
Edexcel
Three papers and an independent investigation. Papers 1 and 2 are 2 hours 15 minutes and worth 30% each. Paper 3 is a shorter synoptic paper worth 20%, at 70 marks, linking ideas across the whole course. The investigation is the final 20%, and students write a report of around 3,000 to 4,000 words based on their own fieldwork.
AQA
Two written papers of 2 hours 30 minutes, each 120 marks and worth 40%. Both end with an extended response question, and Paper 1 offers a choice of case study questions. The final 20% is an independent investigation, with a written report of around 3,000 to 4,000 words.
Cambridge
Four papers of 60 marks. Papers 1 and 2 are the AS papers, covering physical and human geography, and each ends with a short essay question. Papers 3 and 4 complete the A Level, where students choose two topics from a choice of four. Cambridge does not assess fieldwork at all. Exams run in June and November.
OxfordAQA
Five units, each worth 20% of the grade. Units 1 to 4 are 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, covering physical and human geography. Unit 5 is a shorter paper on fieldwork and geographical skills. Before starting, students choose either a deserts or a coasts option. Exams run in January and May or June.
