About A Level English Language
A Level English Language is the qualification students sit in their final year of school. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12 or Upper Sixth. It suits anyone heading for English, linguistics, law, journalism or education degrees. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is that the subject becomes a science. Students stop writing about what a text means and start analysing how the language works: the words chosen, the grammar, the sounds, the structure, and who the text was written for. That needs a technical vocabulary and a method, not instinct.
Every lesson starts from the specification your child's school follows, so study time goes where it counts. We mark real past papers and show exactly where the marks went, and we pull extra practice from our past paper library. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all through Year 13.

A Level English Language Exam Boards We Cover
AQA and Edexcel are the UK boards, and both include a project worth 20% of the final grade. Cambridge and OxfordAQA are the international options. Cambridge is exam-only, while OxfordAQA lets students choose an investigation instead of one exam. Cambridge runs exams in June and November, and OxfordAQA in May/June and January.
AQA
Two written papers, each 2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks and worth 40%. Paper 1 is Language, the Individual and Society, built around analysing unseen texts and a set of language data. Paper 2 is Language Diversity and Change, where students weigh up how language varies and how it has changed. The final 20% is a project: a 2,000 word language investigation plus 1,500 words of original writing and commentary.
Edexcel
Three written papers plus a project. Component 1 is Language Variation at 2 hours 15 minutes, worth 35%. Component 2 is Child Language at 1 hour 15 minutes, worth 20%. Component 3 is Investigating Language, worth 25%, and its sub-topic is released on 1 December before the exam. The final 20% is Crafting Language, a written project of 2,500 to 3,000 words.
Cambridge
Four papers and no coursework, so every mark comes from the exams. Papers 1 and 2 make up the AS: Reading at 2 hours 15 minutes, then Writing at 2 hours. Papers 3 and 4 complete the A Level, on Language Analysis and Language Topics, and each is 2 hours 15 minutes and worth 25%. Every paper is 50 marks. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India.
OxfordAQA
Four units, split into an AS and an A2. Units 1 and 2 each run 2 hours and are worth 20% of the A Level, covering Language and Context and Language and Society. Units 3 and 4 are worth 30% each. Unit 4 is a choice: students can sit a 2 hour exam or submit a 2,500 to 3,000 word language investigation instead. Exams run in May/June and January.
