About A Level Chemistry
A Level Chemistry is the qualification students sit in their final year of school, and the one that opens medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering degrees. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is real. The course splits into three strands — physical, inorganic and organic chemistry — and the maths gets harder. Answers need equations balanced correctly, units stated and explanations written in precise chemical terms. A correct idea can still lose marks if the working or the wording is loose. Your child's tutor shows them how to set answers out the way examiners want.

A Level Chemistry Exam Boards We Cover
Chemistry A Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the content is set by the government and is identical between them — only the paper split changes. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses. We teach both families, always to your child's exact specification.
Edexcel
Two routes sit under this board. UK students sit three papers at the end of the two years: inorganic and physical chemistry, organic and physical chemistry, then a longer paper on general and practical principles. International A Level students sit six units instead, including two dedicated practical skills units.
AQA
Three papers, each two hours. Papers 1 and 2 cover the whole course. Paper 3 tests practical techniques and data analysis, plus a multiple choice section. Across all three papers, at least 20% of the marks are for maths skills.
Cambridge
Five papers across the two years, including a two-hour practical test and a paper on planning, analysis and evaluation. AS students cover topics 1 to 22, and the full A Level builds on those.
OxfordAQA
Two stages. The International AS covers inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and is worth 40% of the final grade. The International A2 adds a practical and synoptic paper for the other 60%. Ten required practicals are assessed in the written papers.
