About AQA GCSE Sociology
AQA GCSE Sociology is code 8192, a linear qualification with both exams at the end of the course. It has two written papers, each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes, worth 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE. AQA applies a scaling factor of one to each paper, so the total scaled mark is 200. It is entered on a single code, 8192, and it is untiered, so there is no Foundation or Higher decision to make. There is no coursework and no non-exam assessment.
Paper 1 is the sociology of families and education, and Paper 2 is the sociology of crime and deviance and social stratification. Both papers carry a third content bullet in identical words: relevant areas of social theory and methodology. That is the important part of the structure. Each paper has two substantive topics plus the same shared strand, so theory and methodology is examinable twice, and a student who treats the papers as four separate topics is describing two thirds of each one.
The question structure is unusual and worth knowing before revision is planned. Each paper has two sections, A and B, and each section opens with exactly two multiple choice questions followed by a range of short and extended responses. That is four multiple choice questions across a 100 mark paper. Almost every mark sits in written answers, so this is a writing subject with a small recall section rather than the other way round. Students who revise by memorising definitions have prepared for four questions out of a hundred marks.
Both papers also say that the topic lists are not a boundary. In identical words they state that students will be expected to draw on knowledge and understanding of the entire course of study to show a deeper understanding of these topics. The weightings tell you what is rewarded: AO1, knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, evidence and methods, is 40%, AO2, applying that knowledge and understanding, is 40%, and AO3, analysing and evaluating to construct arguments and draw conclusions, is 20%. AQA GCSE Sociology: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 8192 specification.
AQA
AQA's GCSE Sociology is code 8192, untiered, with no coursework. Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks each, split into two sections that open with two multiple choice questions apiece. Both papers carry social theory and methodology as a third content strand, so it is examined twice.
How Centaurus Helps AQA GCSE Sociology Students Excel
The Shared Strand Taught Properly
Social theory and methodology appears on both papers, so it is taught as the spine of the course rather than as a Paper 1 topic that gets forgotten.
Extended Answers as the Main Event
Only four multiple choice questions appear across a 100 mark paper, so written answers get the teaching time and recall is treated as a starting point.
Theory Applied to Each Topic
AO2 is 40% and asks students to apply theories and concepts, so each substantive topic is practised through the theories that explain it rather than as a list of findings.
Arguments Built, Not Just Described
AO3 asks students to construct arguments and draw conclusions, so longer answers are taught with a structure for weighing explanations.
The Whole Course Kept Live
AQA expects both papers to draw on the entire course of study, so earlier topics are revisited rather than retired after the first exam.
24/7 Progress Reporting
