About GCSE Sociology
GCSE Sociology is taken at the end of Year 11 and is a subject almost nobody has studied before, which is part of its appeal. It looks at how families, education, crime and class shape people's lives, and at the research methods used to study them. There is no coursework, so the whole grade comes from two written papers. You can see how our GCSE tutoring works.
The paper shape is simple, and it is identical on both papers. AQA sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, worth half of the GCSE each, for a total scaled mark of 200. Paper 1 covers families and education. Paper 2 covers crime and deviance and social stratification. Each paper has a Section A and a Section B, and each section opens with two multiple choice questions before moving to short and extended answers.
The assessment objectives are unusual and worth knowing. AQA gives 40% of the marks to knowledge and 40% to applying it, and only 20% to analysis and evaluation. So the marks are won by knowing the material well and using it in context, not by writing the longest answer. Research methods runs through both papers, and we practise it alongside the content, using past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE Sociology Exam Boards We Cover
There is one route for GCSE Sociology, because Edexcel does not offer the subject. AQA sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, each worth half of the GCSE, and there is no coursework. Every topic is compulsory, with no optional units, and both papers expect students to draw on the whole course rather than one topic at a time.
AQA
Two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, each worth 50% of the GCSE, for a total scaled mark of 200. Paper 1 is The sociology of families and education, covering the sociology of families, the sociology of education, and the relevant areas of social theory and methodology. Paper 2 is The sociology of crime and deviance and social stratification, covering crime and deviance, social stratification, and the same areas of social theory and methodology. Each paper is divided into a Section A and a Section B, and each section opens with two multiple choice questions followed by a range of short and extended responses. All seven content areas are compulsory, so there is nothing to choose or drop, and each paper expects students to draw on the whole course of study. AQA gives 40% of the marks to knowledge and understanding, 40% to application and 20% to analysis and evaluation. There is no coursework and no tier.
How Centaurus Helps GCSE Sociology Students Excel
Board-Specific Topic Coverage
AQA 8192 has its own seven content areas and its own question style. Every one is compulsory, so nothing can be skipped.
Theories and Studies Linked
Marks come from using a study or a theorist to answer the question, not from naming them. We practise that link every week.
Research Methods Covered
Methods and methodology run through both papers. We treat them as examined content rather than as background reading.
Extended Answers Structured
The longer questions ask for a judgement. We teach a repeatable structure that reaches one under time.
Sociology Applied to Real Life
The papers ask students to use examples from society. Lessons work through current cases so answers have something concrete behind them.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
