About AQA GCSE Combined Science
AQA GCSE Combined Science is not one qualification but two, and the first thing worth knowing is which one your child is entered for. The specifications are Trilogy, code 8464, and Synergy, code 8465. A school picks one of them. Both are worth two GCSE grades rather than one, both are tiered, and both cover biology, chemistry and physics. Trilogy is entered as 8464F or 8464H, and Synergy as 8465F or 8465H, so the tier is settled at entry along with the specification itself.
The two are built very differently. Trilogy has six papers, each lasting 1 hour 15 minutes and worth 70 marks and 16.7% of the GCSE, giving a total scaled mark of 420. Its papers divide by content, and the topics run in one continuous sequence of 24 across the three sciences, so Biology Paper 1 owns biology topics 1 to 4, Biology Paper 2 owns topics 5 to 7, and so on through chemistry topics 8 to 17 and physics topics 18 to 24. Synergy has four papers, each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks and 25%, giving a total scaled mark of 400.
Synergy divides by skill rather than by content, and this is the part families miss. Papers 1 and 2 both assess topics 4.1 to 4.4, and Papers 3 and 4 both assess topics 4.5 to 4.8, so the same topics are examined twice. What changes is the purpose of each paper. AQA says Paper 1 places greater emphasis on knowledge and application than on analysis and evaluation, while Paper 2 assesses most of the analysis and evaluation skills and most of the work on the required practicals for those topics. The odd papers are knowledge papers and the even papers are analysis and practical papers, on identical content.
Practical work runs the same way in both. AQA states that a rich practical experience will include more than the 21 required practical activities, and that sentence appears in both specifications. Nothing is marked in the laboratory, but the written exams ask about the work, and AQA warns that candidates lacking hands on experience will be at an immediate disadvantage. Both are graded on a 17-point scale from 1-1 to 9-9, where 9-9 is the best grade. If you want to see how GCSE Combined Science compares across boards, the subject page sets them side by side.
Who AQA GCSE Combined Science Is For
This course suits students sitting either AQA Combined Science specification, Trilogy 8464 or Synergy 8465, who need the papers taught the way that particular specification sets them.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting AQA GCSE Combined Science, Trilogy or Synergy
- Families who are not sure which of the two specifications the school has entered
- Synergy students who revise Papers 1 and 2 the same way and wonder why the marks do not follow

- Home educated and private candidates, who must find a school to host the required practicals

AQA GCSE Combined Science: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers, and AQA offers this subject as two specifications. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 8464 and 8465 files.
AQA
AQA offers GCSE Combined Science as two specifications. Trilogy, code 8464, has six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes and 70 marks, split by content across 24 topics. Synergy, code 8465, has four papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, where each pair examines the same topics once for knowledge and once for analysis and practical work. Both award two grades on a 17-point scale.
How Centaurus Helps AQA GCSE Combined Science Students Excel
Trilogy and Synergy Taught Separately
The two specifications have different paper counts, paper lengths and mark totals, so we teach the one your child is actually entered for rather than a blended version of both.
Synergy's Odd and Even Papers Treated Differently
Papers 1 and 3 test knowledge while Papers 2 and 4 carry most of the analysis and practical marks, so revision is shaped around which kind of paper is next.
Trilogy's Content Split Followed Exactly
Each Trilogy paper owns a fixed block of topics, from biology topics 1 to 4 on Biology Paper 1 through to physics topics 22 to 24 on Physics Paper 2.
The 21 Required Practicals Covered
Both specifications list the same 21 required practical activities, and the written exams ask about them, so the laboratory work is planned rather than left to chance.
Two Grades, Planned Deliberately
Combined Science awards two grades on a 17-point scale, and on Higher tier a student who just misses 4-4 can still be awarded 4-3, so the target is set with that in mind.
