About GCSE Combined Science
GCSE Combined Science is the double award most students take instead of the three separate sciences. It covers biology, chemistry and physics together, and it is worth two GCSE grades rather than one. Those grades come as a pair on a 17-point scale, from 1-1 up to 9-9.
The subject is unusual because the routes look nothing alike. AQA offers two: Trilogy, with six shorter papers split by science, and Synergy, with four longer papers split by life and environmental sciences against physical sciences. Edexcel uses six papers of its own, shorter again, and grades all of them together.
So we start by confirming which route your child is on. Lessons follow that specification's topic list, we cover the practical work the papers examine, and we use real past papers from their board so the practice matches the papers they will actually sit.

GCSE Combined Science Exam Boards We Cover
There are three routes in play here, and they are genuinely different. AQA Trilogy uses six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes, split into two biology, two chemistry and two physics. AQA Synergy uses four longer papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, split by life and environmental sciences against physical sciences. Edexcel uses six papers of 1 hour 10 minutes. Both boards award two grades, and neither sets coursework.
AQA
AQA offers two Combined Science routes, so the first step is confirming which one your child sits. Trilogy uses six papers, each 1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks and 16.7% of the GCSE, split into two biology, two chemistry and two physics, with 21 required practicals. Synergy uses four papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, each worth 25% of the GCSE, split into two life and environmental sciences papers and two physical sciences papers, also with 21 required practicals. Both routes are available at Foundation and Higher tier and award two grades on a 17-point scale from 1-1 to 9-9.
Edexcel
Edexcel uses six externally examined papers: Biology 1 and 2, Chemistry 1 and 2, and Physics 1 and 2. Each is 1 hour 10 minutes, 60 marks and 16.67% of the qualification, and students must complete all assessments in the same tier. There are 18 mandatory core practicals. The qualification is graded on a 17-grade scale from 9-9 to 1-1, where 9-9 is the highest, with Foundation covering 1-1 to 5-5 and Higher covering 4-4 to 9-9. Individual papers are not graded, so everything rests on the total mark.
How Centaurus Helps GCSE Combined Science Students Excel
Route-Specific Teaching
Trilogy, Synergy and Edexcel cover different topic lists and different paper shapes. We teach the one your child sits.
All Three Sciences Covered
One tutor can lift a weak science without neglecting the other two, which matters when the grades come as a pair.
Practical Questions
Practical work is examined inside the written papers. We cover the methods, apparatus and error analysis the questions target.
