About AQA AS Level Physics
AQA AS Level Physics is code 7407, with a DfE discount code of 1210 and an accreditation number of 601/4746/5. It has two papers, both 1 hour 30 minutes long and both carrying 70 marks, worth 50% of the AS each. Both papers assess sections 1 to 5, which are measurements and their errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, and electricity. The AS is graded on a five point scale of A, B, C, D and E, so there is no A star at this level.
The content is identical on both papers, but the design is not. Paper 1 is 70 marks of short and long answer questions split by topic. Paper 2 is set out in three named sections: Section A is 20 marks of short and long answer questions on practical skills and data analysis, Section B is 20 marks of short and long answer questions from across all areas of AS content, and Section C is 30 multiple choice questions. So one paper is written answer throughout and the other carries 30 multiple choice questions and gives practical skills a section of their own.
Two floors run through the qualification. AQA states that 40% of the overall assessment will contain mathematical skills equivalent to Level 2 or above, applied in the context of physics and at least to the standard of higher tier GCSE Mathematics. It also states that at least 15% of the marks will require the assessment of practical skills, and that 15% of the marks in the papers will relate to practical work. The six required practical activities must be carried out by all students, even though the practical endorsement does not apply to the AS.
Sections 6 to 8 are A-level only, and so are the five option sections, so the AS covers five sections against a much larger A Level. There is also a time critical point. AQA states that from 2027, for UK overseas centres only, the AS specifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics will no longer be available, with the last cohort for first teaching in September 2026 and the last first sitting in summer 2027.
