About AQA AS Level Geography
AQA AS Level Geography is code 7036, with a DfE discount code of 3910 for post-16 and RF4 for 14 to 16, and an accreditation number of 601/8971/X. It is a standalone AS specification rather than a combined AS and A-level document, and it is linear. There are two components, both 1 hour 30 minutes long and both carrying 80 marks, scaled at one, giving a total scaled mark of 160. The AS is graded on a five point scale of A, B, C, D and E.
The AS offers real choice. Component 1 is physical geography and people and the environment, and in Section A students answer one question chosen from three topics, which are water and carbon cycles, coastal systems and landscapes, or glacial systems and landscapes, worth 40 marks. In Section B they answer one question chosen from two, which are hazards or contemporary urban environments, also worth 40 marks. So a student studies one physical topic and one people and environment topic and answers the matching questions.
Component 2 is human geography and geography fieldwork investigation. Section A is Changing places and all questions must be answered, for 40 marks. Section B requires question 2 and then either question 3 or question 4, for 40 marks in total, and it covers the geography fieldwork investigation and the geographical skills checklist. Changing places must also be taught through two contrasting places, one of which is local.
The objectives are printed as ranges, and one of them can fall to zero. AO1 is 30 to 40 per cent overall, AO2 is 30 to 40 per cent, and AO3 is 20 to 30 per cent. On Component 1, AO3 is printed as 0 to 10, while on Component 2 it is 10 to 20. So fieldwork and geographical skills sit almost entirely on Component 2. AQA AS Level Geography: The Board We Cover
AQA is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from AQA's own 7036 specification.
AQA
AQA's AS Level Geography is code 7036, a standalone AS with two 80 mark components. Component 1 offers a choice of physical and environment topics. Component 2 covers Changing places and fieldwork, and it is where AO3, the skills objective, actually carries marks.
How Centaurus Helps AQA AS Level Geography Students Excel
Optional Topics Chosen Early
One physical topic from three and one environment topic from two, so the school's choices are confirmed and taught rather than guessed at.
Two Contrasting Places
Changing places requires two places, one local, showing significant contrast, so both are planned into the course instead of one standing in for both.
Skills Marks Found on Component 2
AO3 is 0 to 10 on Component 1 and 10 to 20 on Component 2, so fieldwork and skills revision is aimed at the component that actually rewards it.
Levels of Response Practised
Both components use multiple choice, short answer, levels of response and extended prose, so graded-descriptor answers are written and marked weekly.
The Compulsory Section B Question
Component 2 Section B requires question 2 before the choice between questions 3 and 4, so the compulsory fieldwork question is covered in full.
