About AQA AS Level Economics
AQA AS Level Economics is code 7135, with a DfE discount code of 4410 and an accreditation number of 601/4372/1. It has two papers, both 1 hour 30 minutes long and both carrying 70 marks, worth 50% of the AS each. Each paper contains Section A, which is 20 multiple choice questions worth 20 marks, and Section B, which is data response questions requiring written answers with a choice of one from two contexts worth 50 marks. Both papers are compulsory.
The content splits cleanly. Paper 1 is The operation of markets and market failure and assesses content 1 to 5: economic methodology and the economic problem, price determination in a competitive market, production costs and revenue, competitive and concentrated markets, and the market mechanism with market failure and government intervention. Paper 2 is The national economy in a global context and assesses content 6 to 9: the measurement of macroeconomic performance, how the macroeconomy works with the circular flow of income and AD and AS analysis, economic performance, and macroeconomic policy. So Paper 1 is the microeconomics paper and Paper 2 the macroeconomics paper, and they share no content at all.
The two papers are identical in design, which is unusual in this group. Both have the same 20 multiple choice questions and the same 50 mark data response with a choice of one from two contexts. So there is no difference in technique to learn between them, and the whole task is knowing which themes belong to which paper. The choice in Section B is where the marks concentrate: a student picks one of two contexts and 50 marks rest on that decision.
Two further points shape the course. The four assessment objectives are printed as ranges rather than single figures, with AO2 carrying the highest range at 31 to 33 per cent overall, and they are the same on both papers. Quantitative skills are also assessed, with a minimum of 15% of the overall AS marks covering at least Level 2 mathematical skills, listed in the annex as ratios, percentages, index numbers, cost and profit calculations, real terms and elasticity.
