About O Level Sociology

O Level Sociology 2251 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. It covers six topics: research methods; identity, self and society; social stratification and inequality; family; education; and crime, deviance and social control.

There are no tiers, and the two papers are balanced exactly: each is worth 80 marks and 50% of the qualification. But their structure is not symmetrical, and that is the thing to understand early. Paper 1 is Research Methods, Identity and Inequality. It runs for 2 hours and offers three questions, and candidates answer two. The catch is that Question 1, on research methods, is compulsory, and candidates then choose between the identity question and the inequality question. So there is no route through Paper 1 that avoids research methods. Each question is worth 40 marks. Paper 2 is Family, Education and Crime. It runs for 1 hour 45 minutes and also offers three questions, one on each topic, and candidates simply answer two of the three, so here the choice is free.

The research methods question deserves a second look, because it is unlike anything else on the paper. It has five parts. One part asks candidates to explain the primary methods, sampling and secondary evidence they would use to investigate a specified topic, and to give reasons for their choices. Cambridge is explicit that no subject knowledge of the topic under investigation is required, and that candidates are assessed purely on their knowledge of sociological methodology. They are not even expected to evaluate the methodology they choose. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level Sociology: The Board We Cover

Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Sociology. We teach 2251 in full, across both papers.

Cambridge

Cambridge

Cambridge O Level Sociology 2251 is untiered. All candidates take two papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Research Methods, Identity and Inequality, a written paper of 2 hours and 80 marks carrying 50% of the qualification. It has three questions and candidates answer two: Question 1 on research methods is compulsory, and candidates choose to answer either Question 2 on identity, self and society or Question 3 on social stratification and inequality. Candidates must study all three topics, and each question is worth 40 marks. Question 1 has five parts, and Question 1(a) is based on source material containing qualitative or quantitative information or a mixture of both. Questions 2 and 3 each have six parts. Paper 2 is Family, Education and Crime, a written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks carrying the other 50%. It has three questions, one on family, one on education and one on crime, deviance and social control, and candidates answer two of the three. Each question has six parts and is worth 40 marks. Both papers are externally assessed and there is no coursework. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the June and November series. The syllabus itself carries no zone list; the Cambridge syllabus page states that it is available in administrative zones 3 and 4. Cambridge also lists Cambridge IGCSE Sociology (0495) among the qualifications this syllabus cannot be taken alongside.

How Centaurus Helps O Level Sociology Students Excel

Research Methods Taught Properly

Question 1 on Paper 1 is compulsory and worth 40 marks. It cannot be avoided, so we teach it as its own subject rather than as a sideline.

Study Design Practised

One part asks students to design an investigation and justify their choices, with no topic knowledge needed. We rehearse that skill directly.

Evaluation Built In

Analysis and evaluation carries its own weighting, including explaining strengths and limitations. We teach students to reach for it rather than describe.

Six Topics, All Covered

All six topics are studied, because Paper 1 requires all three of its topics even though students answer only two questions.

Classes in Your Local Time

Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.

24/7 Progress Reporting

Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
