About O Level Physics
O Level Physics 5054 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. It covers six topics: motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; and space physics.
There are no tiers, so every candidate sits the same three papers. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper worth 30%, and it asks 40 four-option questions in 1 hour. Paper 2 is the theory paper, worth 50%, with short-answer and structured questions. The practical side is worth the last 20%, and it comes in two forms: Paper 3 is a Practical Test where students do experiments in a laboratory, and Paper 4 is an Alternative to Practical paper where they do not. Centres enter candidates for one or the other.
Neither practical paper is an easier or harder version of the other. Cambridge states that they require the same experimental skills and the same experimental contexts, and both test experimental skills alone. So whichever route your centre takes, the work to prepare for it is the same. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.
Who O Level Physics Is For
This course suits students sitting Cambridge O Level Physics 5054 who want a grade they can rely on, with no tier decision to fall back on.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting O Level Physics 5054 this year
- Students who want grades A* to E and cannot be moved onto an easier tier
- Learners who can describe a phenomenon but lose marks on the numbers
- Students who have never been taught experimental skills as a taught topic
- Resit students who need targeted work on the practical paper and timing

Cambridge O Level Physics: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Physics. We teach 5054 in full, including both routes through the practical paper.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level Physics 5054 is untiered. All candidates take three papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper of 1 hour and 40 marks, carrying 30% of the qualification, with 40 compulsory four-option items. Paper 2 is a theory paper of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, carrying 50%, using compulsory short-answer and structured questions. Every candidate then takes one practical paper from a choice of two, each worth 40 marks and 20%. Paper 3 is a Practical Test of 1 hour 30 minutes, in which candidates do experiments in a laboratory. Paper 4 is an Alternative to Practical paper of 1 hour, in which candidates are not required to do experiments. Cambridge states that both require the same experimental skills and the same experimental contexts, and both test experimental skills alone. Papers 1 and 2 test knowledge with understanding and handling information and problem-solving, and there is no coursework. Calculators may be used in all parts of the examination. All papers are externally assessed, and the syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours. Exams are available in the June and November series, and the syllabus is available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5.
How Centaurus Helps O Level Physics Students Excel
Practical Paper, Either Route
The Practical Test and the Alternative to Practical demand the same skills. We prepare your child for whichever one your centre enters them for.
Experimental Skills Taught
Experimental skills carry 20% as a subject in their own right. We teach planning, measuring and evaluating methods, not just the theory.
Equation Recall
The equations are not given to candidates, so they have to be learned cold. We drill them until recall is automatic.
Numbers and Units
Marks are lost on units, significant figures and rearranging. We mark working as closely as the final answer.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
