About O Level History
O Level History 2147 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. Every candidate studies one Core content option and at least one Depth study. The Core option is a choice between the nineteenth century, covering the development of modern nation states from 1848 to 1914, and the twentieth century, covering international relations since 1919. The Depth studies are more tightly focused: the First World War, Germany 1918 to 1945, Russia 1905 to 1941, the United States 1919 to 1941, and the Second World War in Europe and the Asia-Pacific.
There are no tiers, and the two papers divide the work unusually cleanly. Paper 1 is Structured Questions and carries 55%: 2 hours, 60 marks, and all questions are structured essays in three parts. Candidates answer two questions from Section A, where eight questions are offered, and one from Section B, which offers two questions on each of the five Depth studies. Paper 2 is Document Questions and carries the other 45%: 1 hour 45 minutes, 40 marks, one question with five parts, built on a range of source material with a maximum of seven sources per question.
The split is not just about question style, it is about skills. Paper 1 tests recall and explanation, and no source work at all. Paper 2 tests recall and source work, and no explanation-building at all. So a student who is strong on essays but weak on sources, or the reverse, has a predictable problem in one paper rather than a diffuse one across both. One point catches families out: the prescribed topic for Paper 2 changes in every exam series, so you cannot assume that the topic sat last year will appear again. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.
