About O Level Geography
O Level Geography 2217 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. It is built on ten topics, split cleanly into physical and human geography. The physical half covers changing river environments, changing coastal environments, changing ecosystems, tectonic hazards and climate change. The human half covers changing populations, changing towns and cities, development, changing economies and resource provision.
There are no tiers, and every candidate sits the same three papers. The split is unusual and worth understanding early, because the content is mapped onto the papers rather than mixed across them. Paper 1 examines the physical topics, 1 to 5, and Paper 2 examines the human topics, 6 to 10. Both are 1 hour 45 minutes, worth 75 marks and 36% of the qualification, and both have the same shape: a compulsory structured question worth 25 marks in Section A, then two questions from three in Section B, each worth 25 marks.
The third paper is different. Paper 3 is Geographical Investigations, a 1 hour 30 minute paper worth 60 marks and 28%, made up of two compulsory questions worth 30 marks each. It is the paper that examines enquiry skills: hypotheses, data collection, methodology and drawing conclusions. Cambridge is explicit that geographical skills are applicable across all components, and that there is no longer a separate skills paper, so the skills work is not confined to Paper 3. Two things families should know before committing. First, this subject is examined in the November series only. Second, Cambridge has narrowed where it is available: the syllabus page states it is available in administrative zones 3 and 4 only. The detail is in our availability answer below. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level Geography: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Geography. We teach 2217 in full, across all three papers.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level Geography 2217 is untiered. All candidates take three papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Physical Geography and Paper 2 is Human Geography, and each is a compulsory written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes and 75 marks, carrying 36% of the qualification. Both have the same structure: Section A is worth 25 marks and contains one compulsory structured question, and Section B is worth 50 marks and candidates answer two of three structured questions, each worth 25 marks. Every question contains short-answer items and an extended response, and some items are based on source material. Paper 1 assesses content from topics 1 to 5 and Paper 2 assesses content from topics 6 to 10. Paper 3 is Geographical Investigations, a compulsory written paper of 1 hour 30 minutes and 60 marks carrying 28%, containing two compulsory questions each worth 30 marks. All three papers are externally assessed, all three test knowledge and understanding, skills and analysis, and evaluation and decision-making, and there is no coursework. Geographical skills are applicable across all components. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the November series only. On availability, the syllabus carries no zone list, and the syllabus page states that it is available in administrative zones 3 and 4 only. Note also that Cambridge lists Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460) and Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Geography (0976) among the qualifications this syllabus cannot be taken alongside.
How Centaurus Helps O Level Geography Students Excel
Physical and Human Kept Apart
Paper 1 is topics 1 to 5 and Paper 2 is topics 6 to 10. We plan the two halves separately so a weak half is not hidden by a strong one.
Both Papers, Same Shape
Section A is a compulsory 25-mark question; Section B is two from three at 25 marks each. We rehearse that structure until it is automatic.
Enquiry Skills for Paper 3
Hypotheses, data collection and methodology are examinable skills, not background reading. We teach them as their own topic.
November Planning
This is a November-only syllabus, so the whole two-year plan is built around one exam window.
