About O Level Literature in English
O Level Literature in English 2010 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 by students aged 14 to 16. Candidates study international literature originally written in English, across the three main forms of poetry, prose and drama.
The syllabus was reviewed and revised for first examination in 2028, and the changes are substantial in two ways. Both papers are now open text papers, which Cambridge also calls open book, so candidates may take their set texts into the exam. And Paper 2 has gained an Unseen section: it is now called Paper 2 Drama and Unseen, its duration has changed to 2 hours, and candidates answer one drama question and one unseen question. Paper 1 has changed too, in that its prose questions are now two essay questions on each set text with no passage-based questions. Marks and weighting have not moved: each paper is still worth 50 marks and 50% of the qualification.
One further thing matters more than anything else on this page. The set texts change with the exam year. The syllabus prints a separate list for 2028, for 2029 and for 2030, and says plainly that the set texts are updated regularly and may change from one year of examination to the next, so a student sitting in 2029 studies different texts from one sitting in 2028. Three set texts are studied in total: two for Paper 1, one poetry and one prose, and one for Paper 2, which is drama. The poetry text means studying all 15 poems from the chosen text, while the prose and drama texts mean studying the whole text. All four assessment objectives carry equal weight, so knowledge, meaning, analysis and personal response each have to earn their share. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level Literature in English: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Literature in English. We teach 2010 in full, across both papers.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level Literature in English 2010 is untiered. All candidates take two papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Poetry and Prose, a written paper of 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks and 50% of the qualification, in which candidates answer two questions, one from Section A and one from Section B, each worth 25 marks. Section A Poetry offers a choice of two questions on each set text, and the poems named in the questions are printed in the question paper. Section B Prose offers two essay questions on each text and requires knowledge of the whole text. Paper 2 is Drama and Unseen, a written paper of 2 hours, 50 marks and 50%, in which candidates answer two questions, one from each section, each worth 25 marks. Section A Drama offers a choice of two questions on each set text, one passage-based and one essay question, with the relevant passages printed on the question paper. Section B Unseen offers a choice of two questions, one based on a poem or extract from a poem and one based on a passage of literary prose fiction. Both papers are open text, so candidates may take their set texts into the exam. Highlighting or underlining is allowed, as are brief handwritten notes using words and phrases rather than full sentences, and published notes or editor's commentary. Separate pieces of paper, sticky notes or similar bookmarks and extended handwritten notes are not allowed. Both papers are externally assessed and there is no coursework. Four assessment objectives are used, and all four carry equal weight. The set texts change with the exam year, and the syllabus prints a separate list for 2028, for 2029 and for 2030. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the June and November series. On availability, the syllabus states that Cambridge O Levels are available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5, but a Cambridge centre notice of July 2026 states that from 2028 this syllabus is available in zone 4 only, and that centres in zones 3 and 5 may wish to consider Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475. Cambridge also lists Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475, Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Literature in English 0992 and Cambridge World Literature 0408 among the qualifications this syllabus cannot be taken alongside.
