About O Level English Language
O Level English Language 1123 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 by students aged 14 to 16. It is worth knowing that this syllabus was designed for learners whose first language may not be English, and Cambridge says so plainly: that design is reflected throughout the examination process.
The two papers look perfectly symmetrical, because both last 2 hours, both are worth 50 marks and both carry 50% of the qualification. But they are not simply one reading paper and one writing paper, and understanding that is the most useful thing a student can take into the exam. Paper 1 is Reading, with two compulsory sections worth 25 marks each. Section A covers comprehension and use of language, and Section B covers summary and short response. The summary sits on the reading paper, yet part of its marks are awarded for how well it is written. Paper 2 is Writing, also with two sections worth 25 marks each. Section A is directed writing, and part of its marks are awarded for reading the source texts well. Section B is a composition. So the reading paper carries writing marks and the writing paper carries reading marks, and Cambridge sets out the split. Nothing here can be safely neglected.
Paper 2 also gives students a genuine choice. The directed writing question is compulsory, but the composition is one question from a choice of four, two descriptive and two narrative, and students write about 350 to 450 words. The directed writing is shorter, at about 250 to 350 words, and is built from one or two source texts. Because the qualification has only two assessment objectives, reading and writing, every mark belongs to one of them. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level English Language: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level English Language. We teach 1123 in full, across both papers.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level English Language 1123 is untiered. All candidates take two papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Reading, a written paper of 2 hours, 50 marks and 50% of the qualification, in two compulsory sections that candidates answer in full. Section A is Comprehension and Use of Language, 25 marks, and Section B is Summary and Short response, 25 marks. The texts are printed in a separate insert, and answers are written in the space provided on the question paper. Paper 2 is Writing, also 2 hours, 50 marks and 50%, and candidates answer two questions, one from section A and one from section B: a compulsory directed writing question of 25 marks built from one or two source texts of about 400 to 450 words, and a composition of 25 marks chosen from four titles, two descriptive and two narrative. Dictionaries must not be used in either paper. Both papers are externally assessed and there is no coursework. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the June and November series. The syllabus prints no zone list and says only that it is not available in all administrative zones, so check your own zone before entering. Cambridge also sets the subject code by location: candidates in Brunei enter 1120, in Mauritius 1125 or 1126, in Singapore K300, and elsewhere 1123. Note that 1120, 1125 and 1126 are themselves qualifications this syllabus cannot be combined with, and Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 is another.
How Centaurus Helps O Level English Language Students Excel
Reading Skills That Earn Marks
Comprehension, language analysis and summary are three different skills worth three different sets of marks, so we teach them separately rather than as one reading block.
Summary Marked as Writing
Part of the summary's marks are awarded for organisation and vocabulary, so we mark summaries the way Cambridge does, not just for the points found.
Directed Writing and Register
Register carries its own marks and is tested only in the directed writing, so students learn to write for a specified reader rather than for their teacher.
Composition: Descriptive and Narrative
The composition offers four titles, so we practise both descriptive and narrative writing instead of letting students settle on one.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
