About O Level Economics
O Level Economics 2281 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. It is built around six themes: the basic economic problem; the allocation of resources; microeconomic decision-makers; government and the macroeconomy; economic development; and international trade and globalisation.
There are no tiers, and every candidate takes the same two papers, but the two papers are very different in shape and weight. Paper 1 is multiple choice: 40 questions in 1 hour, worth 40 marks and 30% of the qualification. Paper 2 is a structured paper worth 70%, and it is the one that decides most grades. It runs for 2 hours and carries 80 marks in two sections. Section A has a single compulsory question worth 20 marks, built on unseen information about a real economic situation, and candidates answer all six parts of it. Section B asks for three questions from a choice of four, each worth 20 marks with four parts.
Calculators may be used in Paper 1 and in both sections of Paper 2, which matters because the paper can ask candidates to make calculations and read diagrams. The evaluation skill sits at the end of each Section B question, in part (d), where candidates have to show clear and logical analysis and argue two sides of an economic issue. One warning is worth knowing early: the syllabus we hold states that Cambridge O Levels are available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5, but Cambridge has since told centres that from 2028 this subject is available in zone 4 only. The detail is in our availability answer below. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level Economics: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Economics. We teach 2281 in full, across both papers.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level Economics 2281 is untiered. All candidates take two papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Multiple Choice and Paper 2 is Structured Questions. Paper 1 is a compulsory multiple-choice paper of 1 hour and 40 marks, carrying 30% of the qualification, with 40 questions based on all the subject content; questions may require candidates to make calculations and analyse diagrams. Paper 2 is a compulsory structured paper of 2 hours and 80 marks, carrying 70%, and it too is based on all the subject content. In Section A candidates answer one compulsory question worth 20 marks, responding to previously unseen information about a real economic situation, on all parts from (a) to (f). In Section B candidates answer three questions from a choice of four, each worth 20 marks with four parts, and part (d) requires evaluation of two sides of an economic argument. Calculators may be used in Paper 1 and in both sections of Paper 2. Both papers are externally assessed and there is no coursework. Paper 1 and Paper 2 assess knowledge and understanding and analysis, and Paper 2 also assesses evaluation. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the June and November series. On availability, the syllabus states that Cambridge O Levels are available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5, but a Cambridge centre notice dated July 2026 states that from 2028 this syllabus is available in zone 4 only, and that centres in zones 3 and 5 may wish to consider Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 instead. Families outside zone 4 should check this before committing to the subject.
How Centaurus Helps O Level Economics Students Excel
The 70% Paper Treated As 70%
Paper 2 carries most of the grade, so it gets most of our time. Paper 1 practice is kept ticking over rather than leading the plan.
Section A Under Time
One unseen compulsory question, worth 20 marks, six parts. We practise reading real economic information and using it, not just describing it.
Evaluation Taught Explicitly
Part (d) asks for two sides and a judgement. Students rarely get there on their own, so we teach the structure.
Zone Change Advised Early
From 2028 this subject is zone 4 only. We flag it before a family commits two years to it.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
