About O Level Computer Science

O Level Computer Science 2210 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. The content is split into two clear halves, and the papers follow them exactly. Computer systems covers data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and its uses, and automated and emerging technologies. Algorithms, programming and logic covers algorithm design and problem-solving, programming, databases and Boolean logic.

There are no tiers. Every candidate takes the same two papers, and each is 1 hour 45 minutes, worth 75 marks and 50% of the qualification. Paper 1 examines the six computer systems topics and Paper 2 examines the four algorithms and programming topics, all in short-answer and structured questions. Two features stand out. The first is that no calculators are permitted in either paper, which matters more than it sounds, because binary, denary and hexadecimal work runs through the course. The second is the scenario question: the final question in Paper 2 is a 15-mark unseen scenario question, and candidates answer it by writing an algorithm in pseudocode or program code. Cambridge expects candidates to spend 30 minutes on that question.

There is also good news for students who worry about syntax. Cambridge states plainly that knowledge of programming language syntax is not examined, and that in all cases the logic is more important than the syntax. So the paper rewards thinking, not memorising a particular language. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.

Cambridge O Level Computer Science: The Board We Cover

Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Computer Science. We teach 2210 in full, across both papers.

Cambridge

Cambridge

Cambridge O Level Computer Science 2210 is untiered. All candidates take two papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is Computer Systems and Paper 2 is Algorithms, Programming and Logic, and each is a written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes and 75 marks, carrying 50% of the qualification. Both papers use short-answer and structured questions, all questions are compulsory in both, and candidates answer on the question paper. Paper 1 is set on Topics 1 to 6 of the subject content, covering computer systems. Paper 2 is set on Topics 7 to 10, covering algorithm design and problem-solving, programming, databases and Boolean logic, and it also contains the scenario question. Calculators are not permitted in either paper. Paper 2 requires candidates to have practical programming experience, but Cambridge states that knowledge of programming language syntax is not examined and that the logic is more important than the syntax. The final question in Paper 2 is a 15-mark unseen scenario question in which candidates write an algorithm using pseudocode or program code, and Cambridge expects about 30 minutes to be spent on it. Both papers are externally assessed, and there is no coursework. The syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours, and private candidates can enter. Exams are available in the June and November series, and the syllabus is available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5.

How Centaurus Helps O Level Computer Science Students Excel

The Scenario Question, Rehearsed

It is a 15-mark question and you cannot see it coming. We practise unseen scenarios every week so it stops being a surprise.

Algorithm Notation Taught

Pseudocode and program code are both accepted, and neither is syntax-marked. We teach the notation the examiners expect to see.

No Calculator, No Problem

Both papers ban calculators, and binary, denary and hexadecimal conversions carry real marks. We drill them by hand.

Two Halves Kept Even

Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry half the qualification. We keep both halves moving instead of revising whichever is easier.

Classes in Your Local Time

Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.

24/7 Progress Reporting

Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
