About O Level Chemistry
O Level Chemistry 5070 is a Cambridge International qualification, usually taken at the end of Year 11 and designed for students aged 14 to 16. It is the broadest science at this level, with twelve topics: states of matter; atoms, elements and compounds; stoichiometry; electrochemistry; chemical energetics; chemical reactions; acids, bases and salts; the Periodic Table; metals; chemistry of the environment; organic chemistry; and experimental techniques and chemical analysis.
The papers follow the same shape as the other O Level sciences. Paper 1 is multiple choice and worth 30%. Paper 2 is the theory paper and worth 50%. The practical side is worth 20% and comes in two forms: Paper 3 is a Practical Test where students do experiments in a laboratory, and Paper 4 is an Alternative to Practical paper where they do not. Centres enter candidates for one or the other. Cambridge states that both routes require the same experimental skills and the same experimental contexts, and that both test experimental skills alone.
What marks Chemistry out is what it asks students to do with their hands and their eyes. The practical side includes salt preparation, separation and purification by filtration, crystallisation, distillation and chromatography, electrolysis, and titrations. Above all it includes identifying substances: metal ions, non-metal ions and gases. For that Cambridge provides notes for use in qualitative analysis in both practical papers, so recognising an unknown is a skill that can be practised and marked. We work from real past papers, and you can see how our O Level tutoring works.
Who O Level Chemistry Is For
This course suits students sitting Cambridge O Level Chemistry 5070 who want a grade they can rely on, with no tier decision to fall back on.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting O Level Chemistry 5070 this year
- Students who want grades A* to E and cannot be moved onto an easier tier
- Learners who can learn the theory but have never practised identifying unknown substances
- Students who lose marks on the maths hidden inside chemistry questions
- Resit students who need targeted work on the practical paper and timing

Cambridge O Level Chemistry: The Board We Cover
Cambridge International is the only board offering Cambridge O Level Chemistry. We teach 5070 in full, including both routes through the practical paper.
Cambridge
Cambridge O Level Chemistry 5070 is untiered. All candidates take three papers and are eligible for grades A* to E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper of 1 hour and 40 marks, carrying 30% of the qualification, with 40 compulsory four-option items. Paper 2 is a theory paper of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, carrying 50%, using compulsory short-answer and structured questions. Every candidate then takes one practical paper from a choice of two, each worth 40 marks and 20%. Paper 3 is a Practical Test of 1 hour 30 minutes, in which candidates are required to do experiments in a laboratory. Paper 4 is an Alternative to Practical paper of 1 hour, in which candidates will not be required to do experiments in a laboratory. Cambridge states that both require the same experimental skills and the same experimental contexts, and both test experimental skills alone, and it provides notes for use in qualitative analysis in both papers. Papers 1 and 2 test knowledge with understanding and handling information and problem-solving, and there is no coursework. Calculators may be used in all parts of the examination. All papers are externally assessed, and the syllabus sets about 130 guided learning hours. Exams are available in the June and November series, and the syllabus is available to centres in administrative zones 3, 4 and 5.
How Centaurus Helps O Level Chemistry Students Excel
Qualitative Analysis Drilled
Cambridge gives the notes; the student still has to recognise the substance. We practise ion and gas tests until they are second nature.
Practical Paper, Either Route
The Practical Test and the Alternative to Practical demand the same skills. We prepare your child for whichever one your centre enters them for.
The Maths Inside Chemistry
Moles, concentrations and unit conversions carry marks across all three papers. We work the calculations until they stop being the hard part.
Twelve Topics, One Plan
Chemistry has the widest content of the O Level sciences. We build a topic-by-topic plan so nothing is discovered late.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
