About IGCSE Sociology
IGCSE Sociology asks students to look at familiar things — family, school, crime, inequality — and explain how society shapes them. It is a written subject. There is no coursework and no practical work on either board, so the whole grade comes from two exam papers.
Both boards use the same simple split: 50% for each paper. What differs is how they arrange the syllabus. Cambridge 0495 divides the subject cleanly. Paper 1 is Research Methods, Identity and Inequality, a 2 hour paper of 80 marks. Paper 2 is Family, Education and Crime, which runs for 1 hour 45 minutes and is also worth 80 marks.
OxfordAQA 9292 does something different and unusual. It puts research methods in both papers. Paper 1 is Introducing Sociology and Paper 2 is Exploring Sociology, and Section C of each one is research methods, worth 16 marks. That means OxfordAQA students are assessed on research methods twice, once in each paper. There is no place to hide if that topic is weak. Both boards also expect students to write at length. Cambridge Paper 1 makes the research methods question compulsory and then asks candidates to choose between two others, while Paper 2 offers two questions from a choice of three. IGCSE Sociology Exam Boards We Cover
Both boards are exam-only with an even 50/50 split, so the choice is really about how the subject is arranged. Cambridge divides the syllabus between its two papers. OxfordAQA examines research methods in both, 16 marks each time. Cambridge grades A* to G, while OxfordAQA grades 1 to 9.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 is not tiered, and all candidates take two components, both externally assessed, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Research Methods, Identity and Inequality: a 2 hour externally assessed paper carrying 80 marks and 50% of the qualification. Candidates answer two structured questions. Question 1, Research methods, is compulsory and includes data response; candidates then choose to answer either Question 2 or Question 3. Paper 2 is Family, Education and Crime: a 1 hour 45 minute externally assessed paper carrying 80 marks and 50% of the qualification, where candidates answer two optional structured questions from a choice of three. There is no coursework — the whole grade comes from the two written papers.
OxfordAQA
OxfordAQA International GCSE Sociology 9292 is not tiered and is a linear qualification, so students sit all their exams at the end of the course. It sets two papers worth 50% each, for grades 1 to 9. Paper 1 is Introducing Sociology: an exam of 1 hour 30 minutes carrying a total of 60 marks. It covers Families, Education and Research methods. Section A is Families, worth 22 marks of short and extended response questions. Section B is Education, also worth 22 marks of short and extended response questions. Section C is Research methods, worth 16 marks, made up of short questions and a structured question based on data about an unseen issue of global sociological significance. Paper 2 is Exploring Sociology: an exam of 1 hour 30 minutes carrying a total of 60 marks. It covers Differences and inequalities, Socialisation and social control, and Research methods. Section A is Differences and Inequalities, worth 22 marks of short and extended response questions. Section B is Socialisation and Social Control, worth 22 marks of short and extended response questions. Section C is Research methods again, worth 16 marks of short and extended response questions. Guided learning hours are 120 to 140, and the qualification is graded on a nine-point scale from 1 to 9, where 9 is the best grade, in line with UK GCSEs.
