About IGCSE ICT
IGCSE ICT covers how information and communication technology is used in practice. The theory side runs through computer systems, input and output devices, storage devices and media, networks and their effects, the effects of using IT, ICT applications, the systems life cycle, and safety and security. Then come the applications themselves: documents, databases, presentations, spreadsheets and websites.
Much of the assessment here is hands-on. Cambridge 0417 splits it into three components: a theory paper worth 40%, and two separate practical tests worth 30% each, so 60% of the qualification is practical work at a computer. Edexcel 4IT1 uses two papers instead: a written paper worth 50%, and one three-hour practical paper for the other 50%.
The practical work decides the grade on both boards, and the two boards divide it differently. Cambridge spreads it across two shorter tests covering different applications. Edexcel puts everything into a single long one, so stamina matters as much as skill. We work from real past papers.
Who IGCSE ICT Is For
This course suits students who want an ICT grade they can rely on, and who will be assessed mostly on practical work at a computer.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting IGCSE ICT this year
- Students preparing for Cambridge 0417 or Edexcel 4IT1
- Students aiming for the top grades on their board's scale
- Learners who are confident with software but lose marks on the theory paper
- Students who need speed and accuracy across documents, databases, spreadsheets, presentations and websites

IGCSE ICT Exam Boards We Cover
Both boards assess mostly practical work, but they divide it differently. Cambridge 0417 sets three components: a theory paper at 40% and two practical tests at 30% each, so 60% of the qualification is practical. Edexcel 4IT1 sets two papers: a written paper at 50% and a single three-hour practical paper at 50%.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 is not tiered, and all candidates take three components, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Theory: a 1 hour 30 minute written paper of 80 marks, worth 40% of the qualification, with questions based on sections 1 to 21 of the subject content, all of them compulsory. Paper 2 is Document Production, Databases and Presentations: a 2 hour 15 minute practical test of 70 marks, worth 30%, assessing the practical skills needed to use the applications covered in sections 17, 18 and 19. Component 3 is Spreadsheets and Website Authoring: a 2 hour 15 minute practical test of 70 marks, worth 30%, assessing the applications covered in sections 20 and 21. In both practical tests, candidates must also demonstrate the practical skills relevant to sections 11 to 16, and all tasks are compulsory. Every component is externally assessed, and Cambridge publishes the test date window for Components 2 and 3 on its timetable. The subject content runs across 21 sections, from types and components of computer systems, input and output devices, storage devices and media, networks and the effects of using them, the effects of using IT, ICT applications, the systems life cycle, safety and security, audience, communication, file management, images, layout, styles, proofing, and graphs and charts, through to document production, databases, presentations, spreadsheets and website authoring.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in ICT 4IT1 is not tiered, and its assessment comprises both written and practical papers. Paper 1 is the Written Paper: a 1 hour 30 minute written examination worth 100 marks and 50% of the total. Paper 2 is the Practical Paper: a three-hour practical examination worth 100 marks and 50% of the total. Both papers are externally assessed. The qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, where 9 is the highest grade, and individual components are not graded. The first certification was in 2019. The content is organised into six areas: digital devices, connectivity, operating online, online goods and services, applying ICT, and software skills.
How Centaurus Helps IGCSE ICT Students Excel
Two Practical Tests on Cambridge
Documents, databases and presentations in one test, spreadsheets and website authoring in the other. We drill each one separately.
The Three-Hour Practical on Edexcel
One long paper covering everything, so stamina matters. We build the speed to keep producing accurate work for three hours.
Applications Mastery
Documents, databases, spreadsheets, presentations and websites all carry marks. We work in the real software, on real tasks, not on theory alone.
Theory Paper Technique
Cambridge's theory paper carries 40% and Edexcel's written paper carries 50%. We keep the written side moving alongside the practical work.
