About IGCSE Geography
IGCSE Geography covers physical and human geography and the skills that hold them together. Students study rivers, coasts and hazards alongside population, settlement, economic activity and development, and learn to read maps, graphs and data.
The two boards handle fieldwork in completely different ways. Cambridge 0460 sets three components, and the third is a choice: either a centre-based coursework assignment of up to 2000 words, or a written Alternative to Coursework paper. Edexcel 4GE1 has no coursework at all. Its fieldwork is examined inside both written papers, each of which contains a fieldwork-related question.
The weightings are unusual too. Edexcel puts 60% of the qualification on Paper 2, Human geography, and only 40% on Paper 1, Physical geography, whose paper runs just 1 hour 10 minutes. Cambridge puts the largest share, 45%, on its Geographical Themes paper, with 27.5% each on skills and on the coursework or alternative. We work from real past papers.

IGCSE Geography Exam Boards We Cover
The two boards could hardly be more different. Cambridge 0460 sets three components and lets the centre choose a coursework assignment or a written Alternative to Coursework for the third. Edexcel 4GE1 sets two written papers, has no coursework, and examines fieldwork inside both. Cambridge grades A* to G, while Edexcel grades 9 to 1.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Geography 0460 is not tiered, and all candidates take three components, for grades A* to G: Paper 1 and Paper 2, plus either Component 3 or Paper 4. Paper 1 is Geographical Themes, a 1 hour 45 minute externally assessed paper carrying 45% of the qualification. It is worth 75 marks, weighted to 100 marks, and candidates answer three questions worth 25 marks each, one from each section. Specific questions based on fieldwork are not set in Paper 1, though candidates may use their fieldwork to illustrate answers. Paper 2 is Geographical Skills, a 1 hour 30 minute externally assessed paper of 60 marks carrying 27.5%, where candidates answer all the questions. The third component is a choice worth 27.5% and 60 marks. Component 3 is Coursework, where teachers set one centre-based assignment of up to 2000 words, and it is centre-based assessment. Paper 4 is an Alternative to Coursework, a 1 hour 30 minute externally assessed paper where candidates answer two compulsory questions, completing a series of written tasks. The syllabus is divided into three themes: population and settlement, the natural environment, and economic development.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Geography 4GE1 is not tiered, and sets two externally assessed written papers with no coursework. Paper 1 is Physical geography: a written examination of 1 hour 10 minutes worth 70 marks and 40% of the total. It has two sections. In Section A candidates choose two out of three questions on river environments, coastal environments and hazardous environments. In Section B they choose one out of three fieldwork-related questions on the same three topics. Paper 2 is Human geography: a written examination of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 105 marks and 60% of the total, with three sections. Section A offers two out of three questions on economic activity and energy, rural environments and urban environments. Section B offers one out of three fieldwork-related questions on the same three topics. Section C offers one out of three questions on fragile environments and climate change, globalisation and migration, and development and human welfare. Both papers are available as a paper-based or an onscreen assessment, and both mix multiple-choice, short-answer, data-response and open-ended questions. The qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale.
How Centaurus Helps IGCSE Geography Students Excel
Coursework or Exam Route Confirmed
Cambridge lets the centre choose and Edexcel does not. We confirm your route before the first lesson, because it changes what to practise.
Fieldwork Questions Prepared
On Edexcel, fieldwork is examined inside both papers, and on Cambridge it is the coursework assignment. Either way it carries marks that are easy to overlook.
Case Studies Made Specific
Named examples and case studies decide the longer answers. We build a small set your child knows inside out rather than a long list they half remember.
Maps, Graphs and Data
Geographical skills are examined directly, and on Cambridge they have a paper of their own worth 27.5%. We drill them weekly.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
