About IGCSE English Literature
IGCSE English Literature is assessed almost entirely by essay. Students study poetry, prose and drama, and they are marked on how well they analyse language, form and structure and how confidently they build an argument. There is no tiering on any of the three boards.
What makes this subject unusual is that every board offers a coursework route, and on every board the school chooses it. The student does not get a say. That single fact matters more here than on any other subject we teach.
The size of the coursework is different on each board. On Cambridge 0475 it is Component 5, worth 25%. On Edexcel 4ET1 it is Component 3, worth 40% — the same content as the exam it replaces, assessed by two assignments instead. On OxfordAQA 9275 it is a Non-exam assessment worth 20%, and it is one extended response on a prose fiction text of the student's own choice, as long as that text is not on the prescribed list. We work from real past papers. Cambridge also offers the most routes of the three. Everyone sits Paper 1. After that a candidate takes either Paper 2 and nothing else, or Paper 3 with Paper 4 Unseen, or Paper 3 with Component 5 Coursework.
Who IGCSE English Literature Is For
This course suits students who have read the texts but need help writing about them in the way examiners reward.
- Students who know the texts but write thin answers that miss the assessment objectives
- Candidates whose school has entered them for a coursework route and who need help with longer written assignments
- Learners preparing for closed book exams who need quotations learned and deployed accurately
- Students facing an Unseen paper who need a method for writing about a poem or extract they have never read
- Students aiming for the top grades who need to build a critical style rather than retell the plot

IGCSE English Literature Exam Boards We Cover
All three boards offer a coursework route, but the shape and size of the choice differ. Cambridge 0475 gives 25% coursework on one of its three routes, Edexcel 4ET1 gives 40%, and OxfordAQA 9275 gives 20% on one of two routes. Cambridge grades A* to G, while Edexcel and OxfordAQA grade 9 to 1.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475 is not tiered, and candidates will be eligible for grades A* to G. All candidates take Paper 1 Poetry and Prose: a 1 hour 30 minute externally assessed paper of 50 marks carrying 50% of the qualification, with two questions on two texts, one poetry and one prose. Candidates then take one of three routes. They may take Paper 2 Drama, a 1 hour 30 minute externally assessed paper of 50 marks carrying 50%, with two questions on two texts. Or they may take Paper 3 Drama (Open Text), a 45 minute externally assessed paper of 25 marks carrying 25% with one question on one text, together with either Paper 4 Unseen or Component 5 Coursework. Paper 4 Unseen is a 1 hour 15 minute externally assessed paper of 25 marks carrying 25%, with one question requiring critical commentary. Component 5 Coursework is a portfolio of two assignments, each on a different text, worth 25 marks and 25%, and it is internally assessed and externally moderated.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in English Literature 4ET1 is not tiered and is a linear qualification, so all components must be taken at the end of the course of study. It is a choice of a 100 per cent external assessment, or a 60 per cent external examination and 40 per cent internal coursework option. Learners must complete Component 1, plus either Component 2 or Component 3. Component 1 is Poetry and Modern Prose, paper code 4ET1/01: externally assessed, worth 60% of the total, a written examination of 2 hours carrying 90 marks and available in June and November. Component 2 is Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts, paper code 4ET1/02: externally assessed, worth 40% of the total, a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes carrying 60 marks. Component 3 covers the same content and carries the same 40% of the total and 60 marks, but is a non-examined assessment, internally assessed and externally moderated. It is assessed through two assignments, internally set and assessed, and externally moderated by Pearson. This specification is Issue 3, August 2025.
OxfordAQA
OxfordAQA International GCSE English Literature 9275 is not tiered and offers two routes, graded on a nine-point scale from 1 to 9. Route A is entirely exam based. Paper 1: Prose and drama is a written exam of 1 hour 30 minutes, closed book, carrying 60 marks and 40% of International GCSE, with Section A Prose fiction at 30 marks and Section B Drama at 30 marks. Paper 2a: Poetry and unseen texts is a written exam of 2 hours 15 minutes, open book, carrying 90 marks and 60% of International GCSE, with Section A Poetry at 30 marks and Section B Unseen poetry at 30 marks. Route B replaces that second paper with two components. Paper 1 is the same. Paper 2b: Poetry is a written exam of 1 hour 30 minutes, open book, carrying 60 marks and 40% of International GCSE, with Section A Poetry at 30 marks and Section B Unseen poetry at 30 marks. The Non-exam assessment carries 30 marks and 20% of International GCSE, and students complete one extended response to a prose fiction text of their choice, which must not come from the prescribed list of set texts. This specification is Version 5.1, for exams May/June 2018 onwards.
How Centaurus Helps
Knowing which route your school has chosen
The coursework, its weighting and even the number of papers depend on the route. We start by confirming exactly what a student is entered for.
Essay structure that hits the objectives
Marks come from analysis, not summary. We teach a paragraph frame that keeps students on the assessment objectives rather than retelling the story.
Quotation and closed book discipline
Cambridge Paper 1 and OxfordAQA Paper 1 are closed book. We build a quotation bank and rehearse using it under time pressure.
Unseen poetry method
Cambridge Paper 4 and OxfordAQA's Section B both demand analysis of a text the student has never seen. We practise the same reliable steps until they are automatic.
Coursework coaching where it applies
On Edexcel Component 3 and Cambridge Component 5 the assignments are worth a large share of the grade. We help students plan, draft and revise them properly.
Critical style and personal response
Edexcel and OxfordAQA reward a sustained critical voice. We move students from describing texts to arguing about them.
