About IGCSE English Language

IGCSE English Language is about reading closely and writing well. Students analyse unseen and studied texts, then produce descriptive, imaginative, argumentative and discursive writing of their own.

This subject works differently from every other IGCSE. All three boards let your centre choose between sitting a second written paper and submitting a coursework or non-exam assessment instead. On Cambridge the choice is between Paper 2 and a Coursework Portfolio, each worth 50%. On Edexcel it is between Component 2 and Component 3, each worth 40%. On OxfordAQA it is between Paper 2 and a non-exam assessment project, each worth 40%.

All three boards also offer an optional spoken assessment, and on none of them does it count towards the grade. Cambridge's Component 4 Speaking and Listening Test is separately endorsed, with certificates recording achievement from grade 1, the highest, down to grade 5. Edexcel's Spoken Language Endorsement is graded Not Classified, Pass or Merit. So a student can be an excellent speaker and see that recognised only in an endorsement, never in their grade. We work from real past papers.

IGCSE English Language Exam Boards We Cover

Every one of the three boards lets the centre choose between a second written paper and a coursework or non-exam route, and every one offers an optional spoken endorsement that stays off the grade. Cambridge splits its qualification 50/50 and endorses speaking from grade 1 to grade 5. Edexcel and OxfordAQA both split 60/40, and Edexcel endorses speaking as Not Classified, Pass or Merit.

Cambridge

Cambridge

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 is not tiered, and all candidates take two components, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Reading: a 2 hour paper of 80 marks, worth 50% of the qualification, using structured and extended writing questions based on three reading texts. The second component is a choice. Paper 2 is Directed Writing and Composition: a 2 hour paper of 80 marks, worth 50%, with an extended writing question and a composition task. Alternatively, Component 3 is a Coursework Portfolio worth 50% and 80 marks, made up of three extended writing assignments, internally assessed and externally moderated. Component 4 is optional: a Speaking and Listening Test of approximately 10 to 12 minutes worth 40 marks, comprising an individual talk and a conversation, internally assessed and externally moderated. It is separately endorsed, so its marks do not contribute to the overall grade. Instead, where candidates perform to an appropriate standard, certificates record achievement of grades 1 (high) to 5 (low).

Edexcel

Edexcel

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in English Language (Specification A) 4EA1 is not tiered. Component 1 is Non-fiction Texts and Transactional Writing: an externally assessed written examination of 2 hours 15 minutes worth 90 marks and 60% of the total. Students must then complete either Component 2 or Component 3, and both are worth 40% and 60 marks. Component 2 is Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing: an externally assessed written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes, which is available as a paper-based or an onscreen assessment. Component 3 carries the same title and the same content, but it is a non-examined assessment, internally assessed and externally moderated. On Component 2, Section A is a 30-mark essay on a poetry or prose text from the anthology, and Section B is one 30-mark imaginative writing task from a choice of three. The qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, and individual components are not graded. The optional Spoken Language Endorsement is graded and certificated Not Classified, Pass or Merit, and is reported as a separate grade on the student's certificate.

OxfordAQA

OxfordAQA

OxfordAQA International GCSE English Language 9270 is not tiered, and sets two components. Paper 1 is Literary non-fiction and composition: a written exam of 2 hours worth 80 marks and 60% of the International GCSE. Section A is Literary non-fiction, worth 40 marks, based on a single text for close study divided into sections with questions, with at least one question relating to the whole text. Section B is Composition, also worth 40 marks, with three tasks from which students choose one: descriptive, imaginative, argumentative and discursive. The second component is a choice worth 40%. Paper 2 is Source-based reading and directed writing: a written exam of 2 hours worth 80 marks. Alternatively, the non-exam assessment project is worth 40% and 60 marks, and consists of a written task and a commentary, teacher assessed and moderated. The qualification is graded in line with UK GCSEs on a nine-point scale, with grades 1 to 9, where 9 is the best grade, and it sets 120 guided learning hours. Speaking and listening is an optional endorsement: each student undertakes one extended task, either a presentation or an interview with extended turns, teacher assessed and moderated.

How Centaurus Helps IGCSE English Language Students Excel

Exam or Coursework Route Confirmed

Cambridge, Edexcel and OxfordAQA all let the centre choose. We confirm your route before the first lesson, because it changes what to practise.

Coursework Feedback

On the coursework and non-exam routes, feedback before submission is what earns marks. We work through drafts against the assessment criteria.

Close Reading Technique

Picking apart a text for language and structure is a skill, not a talent. We drill it on unseen extracts and anthology texts.

Extended Writing Structure

Descriptive, imaginative, argumentative and discursive writing each need a different shape. We teach all four.

Classes in Your Local Time

Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.

24/7 Progress Reporting

Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
