About IGCSE Economics
IGCSE Economics covers how markets work and how economies are managed. It runs through the basic economic problem, the allocation of resources, microeconomic decision makers, government and the macroeconomy, economic development, and international trade and globalisation.
The three boards divide the subject in similar ways but weight the papers very differently. Cambridge sets two papers, and one of them, a 2 hour 15 minute structured paper, carries 70% of the qualification on its own. Its multiple-choice paper is a short 45 minute exam worth 30%. Edexcel and OxfordAQA both split their marks evenly, with two written papers at 50% each.
There is another difference worth knowing. Cambridge isolates multiple choice into its own short paper. Edexcel embeds multiple-choice questions inside papers that also carry short-answer, data response and open-ended questions, and OxfordAQA opens each paper with 10 multiple-choice questions. On Cambridge, a weak structured paper therefore costs far more than a weak multiple-choice paper. We work from real past papers.

IGCSE Economics Exam Boards We Cover
All three boards divide economics into micro and macro, and none of them tiers it. The difference is where the marks sit. Cambridge puts 70% of the qualification into one 2 hour 15 minute structured paper. Edexcel and OxfordAQA split their marks evenly, with two papers at 50% each. Cambridge grades A* to G, while the other two grade 9 to 1.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 is not tiered, and all candidates take two components, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Multiple Choice: a 45 minute paper of 30 marks, carrying 30% of the qualification, and candidates answer all 30 questions. Paper 2 is Structured Questions: a 2 hour 15 minute paper of 90 marks, carrying 70%, where candidates answer one compulsory question and three questions from a choice of four. Both papers are externally assessed. The content runs across six areas: the basic economic problem, the allocation of resources, microeconomic decision makers, government and the macroeconomy, economic development, and international trade and globalisation.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Economics 4EC1 is a single tier of entry, and the content is organised around two themes. Paper 1 is Microeconomics and Business Economics: a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes worth 80 marks and 50% of the total. Paper 2 is Macroeconomics and the Global Economy: also a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes worth 80 marks and 50%. Each paper consists of four compulsory questions, each worth 20 marks, and the sub-questions are a mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer, data response and open-ended questions. Both papers are externally assessed, and learners may use a calculator. The qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, and individual components are not graded. The first certification was in 2019.
OxfordAQA
OxfordAQA International GCSE Economics 9214 is not tiered, and sets two papers. Paper 1 is How markets work, and Paper 2 is How economies work. Both are written exams of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 80 marks and 50% of the qualification each. Both papers share the same internal structure: Section A carries 48 marks and opens with 10 multiple-choice questions followed by a range of calculation, short and extended response questions, and Section B carries 32 marks across five questions involving a mix of calculations, short and extended response questions. Paper 1 covers economic foundations, resource allocation, how prices are determined, production, costs, revenue and profit, competitive and concentrated markets, and market failure. Paper 2 covers government objectives, how the government manages the economy, international trade and the global economy, and the role of money and financial markets. The qualification is graded on a nine-point scale, with grades 1 to 9, where 9 is the best grade.
How Centaurus Helps IGCSE Economics Students Excel
Paper Weighting Understood
Cambridge's structured paper carries 70%, while Edexcel and OxfordAQA split 50/50. We plan revision around where your board puts the marks.
Extended Answers Structured
Economics rewards a chain of reasoning, not a list of points. We teach a repeatable structure so answers reach a judgement.
Data Response Practice
Reading a table or a graph and applying theory to it carries real marks. We drill it as exam technique, not as reading.
Multiple Choice Handled Your Way
Cambridge isolates it in a 45 minute paper, while Edexcel and OxfordAQA embed it inside larger papers. Either way it gets its own practice.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live group sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
