About IGCSE Business Studies
IGCSE Business Studies covers how a business is set up, run and judged. It runs through business activity, people in business, marketing, operations management, finance, and the external influences that shape all of it.
This is one of the few IGCSEs where the board matters less than you would expect. Cambridge 0450 and Edexcel 4BS1 set very nearly the same shape: two papers, 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks each, worth 50% each, built from four questions. What differs is the questions themselves. Cambridge splits by question style, with short answer and data response in one paper and a case study in the other. Edexcel splits by the size of the business, with Paper 1 focused on a small business of up to 49 employees and Paper 2 on a large business of more than 250 employees.
OxfordAQA 9225 is the outlier. Its two papers run 2 hours and 90 marks each, and each is built from three sections: multiple choice and short answer, then two case study sections worth approximately 40 and 35 marks. So an OxfordAQA student sits 30 minutes longer per paper and works through more questions. We work from real past papers.

IGCSE Business Studies Exam Boards We Cover
Cambridge and Edexcel set almost the same paper: two papers, 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks each, worth 50% each, built from four questions. The difference is what those questions cover. OxfordAQA runs longer papers, at 2 hours and 90 marks each, built from three sections. Cambridge grades A* to G, while the other two grade 9 to 1.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 is not tiered, and all candidates take two components, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Short Answer and Data Response: a 1 hour 30 minute paper of 80 marks, worth 50% of the qualification, with four questions requiring a mixture of short answers and structured data responses, and candidates answer all questions. Paper 2 is Case Study: a 1 hour 30 minute paper of 80 marks, worth 50%, with four questions based on a case study provided as an insert with the paper, and again candidates answer all questions. Both papers are externally assessed. The content runs across six areas: understanding business activity, people in business, marketing, operations management, financial information and decisions, and external influences on business activity.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Business 4BS1 is a single tier of entry. Paper 1 is Investigating small businesses: a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes worth 80 marks and 50% of the total, and it focuses on a small business of up to 49 employees. Paper 2 is Investigating large businesses: also a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes worth 80 marks and 50%, focusing on a large business of more than 250 employees. Each paper consists of four compulsory questions, each worth 20 marks. Both papers are externally assessed. The qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, and individual components are not graded. The first certification was in 2019. The content is organised into five areas: business activity and influences on business, people in business, business finance, marketing, and business operations.
OxfordAQA
OxfordAQA International GCSE Business 9225 is not tiered, and sets two papers. Paper 1 is Influences of operations and human resources on business activity, covering business in the real world, influences on business, business operations and human resources. Paper 2 is Influences of marketing and finance on business activity, covering marketing and finance. Both are written exams of 2 hours worth 90 marks and 50% of the International GCSE each, and both papers follow the same three-section structure. Section A carries 15 marks of multiple choice and short answer questions. Section B carries approximately 40 marks and contains one case study or data response stimulus with a mixture of 6 to 8 compulsory short answer and extended response questions. Section C carries approximately 35 marks and follows the same shape. The qualification is graded in line with UK GCSEs on a nine-point scale, with grades 1 to 9, where 9 is the best grade, and the specification sets 120 to 140 guided learning hours.
How Centaurus Helps IGCSE Business Studies Students Excel
Board Difference Kept Straight
Cambridge and Edexcel set the same paper shape but different question styles, and OxfordAQA runs longer papers. We teach the one your child sits.
Case Study Technique
Cambridge supplies its case study as an insert, Edexcel frames every paper around a business, and OxfordAQA builds two sections from case material. Applying theory to an unseen case decides grades.
Extended Answers Structured
Judgement and evaluation carry the top marks. We teach a repeatable structure so answers reach a conclusion.
Data Response Practice
Cambridge's Paper 1 is built on structured data responses and OxfordAQA's Section A is short answer. We drill both as exam technique.
