About IGCSE Accounting
IGCSE Accounting covers the double entry model and the statements that come out of it. Students learn how to record data and prepare ledgers and trial balances, then build and interpret income statements, statements of financial position and cash flows.
All three boards divide the subject into the same two halves, one paper on recording data and one on financial statements, and none of them tiers it. What differs sharply is the weighting. Cambridge puts 70% of the qualification into its structured paper and 30% into multiple choice. Edexcel leans the other way, with 66.6% on the bookkeeping paper and 33.3% on financial statements. OxfordAQA splits its marks exactly in half.
That changes what a student should practise most. On Edexcel the first paper is worth twice the second. On Cambridge the structured paper is worth more than twice the multiple-choice paper, and that multiple-choice paper carries only 35 marks, one of the shortest papers in any IGCSE subject. OxfordAQA gives both papers the same weight and even the same internal structure. We work from real past papers.
Who IGCSE Accounting Is For
This course suits students who want an Accounting grade they can rely on, on a board where the split between the two papers decides where the work goes.
- Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting IGCSE Accounting this year
- Students preparing for Cambridge 0452, Edexcel 4AC1 or OxfordAQA 9215

IGCSE Accounting Exam Boards We Cover
All three boards split accounting into a bookkeeping paper and a financial statements paper, and none of them tiers it. The weightings are entirely different: Cambridge runs 30% multiple choice against 70% structured, Edexcel runs 66.6% bookkeeping against 33.3% financial statements, and OxfordAQA splits its two papers exactly 50/50.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452 is not tiered, and all candidates take two components, for grades A* to G. Paper 1 is Multiple Choice: a 1 hour 15 minute paper of 35 marks, carrying 30% of the qualification, with multiple-choice questions based on all syllabus content. Paper 2 is a Structured Written Paper: a 1 hour 45 minute paper of 100 marks, carrying 70%, with questions also based on all syllabus content. Both papers are externally assessed. With only 35 marks on Paper 1, it is one of the shortest papers in any IGCSE subject.
Edexcel
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Accounting 4AC1 is not tiered. Paper 1 is Introduction to Bookkeeping and Accounting: a 2 hour written examination worth 100 marks and 66.6% of the total, drawing exclusively from topics 1 to 3. It is presented in two sections. Section A has 10 one-mark multiple-choice questions and three short-answer questions worth 5 marks each, giving 25 marks. Section B has five multi-part questions worth 15 marks each, giving 75 marks. Paper 2 is Financial Statements: a 1 hour 15 minute written examination worth 50 marks and 33.3% of the total. It is more holistic in nature, building on the earlier topics and applying them to realistic case studies. The examination is a mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer and long-answer questions, and the qualification is graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale.
OxfordAQA
OxfordAQA International GCSE Accounting 9215 is not tiered, and sets two papers. Paper 1 is Introduction to Book keeping and Financial Accounting, covering content 1 to 3, and Paper 2 is Financial Statements, covering content 3 to 5. Both are written exams of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 75 marks and 50% of the GCSE each, and both follow the same structure. Section A has 10 multiple-choice questions worth 10 marks followed by a range of short answer questions worth 15 marks, giving 25 marks. Section B has three structured questions, two worth 15 marks and one worth 20 marks, giving 50 marks. The qualification is graded in line with UK GCSEs on a nine-point scale, with grades 1 to 9, where 9 is the best grade. This version of the specification applies to International GCSE exams from May/June 2026 onwards.
