About GCSE Psychology
GCSE Psychology is taken at the end of Year 11 and is a popular choice because the subject is new to almost everyone in the class. It covers how memory works, how people develop, how the brain affects behaviour and how other people influence us. Both boards set two written papers, and neither grades coursework, so everything rests on the exams. You can see how our GCSE tutoring works.
The two boards weight their papers differently. AQA sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, worth half of the GCSE each. Edexcel's Paper 1 is worth 55% and its shorter Paper 2 is worth 45%. Edexcel also lets students choose which topics to study in Paper 2, where AQA examines the same eight topics for everyone.
Research methods carries more weight than students expect. On AQA it is a topic inside Paper 1, and the skills are then assessed across both papers. On Edexcel it is Section A of Paper 2 and always appears. Mean, median, mode, range, graphs and sampling all come up, so we drill the data work alongside the studies, using past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE Psychology Exam Boards We Cover
Both boards set two written papers, grade 9 to 1 and set no coursework. The difference is in the weighting and the choice. AQA's two papers are equal at 100 marks each, and every student studies the same eight topics. Edexcel's Paper 1 carries 55% against Paper 2's 45%, and Paper 2 asks students to answer two sections from five optional topics.
AQA
Two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, each worth 50% of the GCSE, for a total scaled mark of 200. Paper 1 is Cognition and behaviour, covering Memory; Perception; Development; and Research methods. Paper 2 is Social context and behaviour, covering Social influence; Language, thought and communication; Brain and neuropsychology; and Psychological problems. Each paper is divided into four sections of 25 marks, and every section mixes multiple choice, short answer and extended writing. All eight topics are compulsory, with no optional content, and both papers expect students to draw on the whole course rather than one topic at a time. Research methods, practical research skills and mathematical skills are assessed across all topic areas in both papers. A calculator is allowed, and there is no coursework.
Edexcel
Two written papers, and they are not equally weighted. Paper 1 is 1 hour and 45 minutes, 98 marks and 55% of the qualification, covering five compulsory topics: Development; Memory; Psychological problems; The brain and neuropsychology; and Social influence. It has six sections, the first five covering one topic each, and the sixth carrying two extended questions on debates within psychology and the links between core areas. Paper 2 is 1 hour and 20 minutes, 79 marks and 45%. Section A is compulsory and covers Research methods, and it can draw on the topics from Paper 1. Students then answer all questions from two of Sections B to F, choosing from Criminal psychology; The self; Perception; Sleep and dreaming; and Language, thought and communication. Every optional section has the same structure, so no option is easier than another. Calculators may be used, and there is no coursework.
How Centaurus Helps GCSE Psychology Students Excel
Board-Specific Topic Coverage
AQA examines eight topics for everyone. Edexcel examines five, plus research methods, plus two the student chooses. We teach the combination your child actually sits.
Optional Topics Advised, Not Guessed
Edexcel students pick two from five. We look at what the school is teaching and how your child writes, then advise from there.
Research Methods Covered Properly
Mean, median, mode, range, graphs and sampling are examined on both boards. We practise them as questions, not as background reading.
Studies Used as Evidence
Marks come from using a study to support an argument, not from naming it. We train students to bring the right study in at the right moment.
Extended Answers Structured
Around 30% of the marks are for analysis and evaluation. We teach a repeatable structure so answers reach a judgement instead of stopping short.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
