About GCSE Geography
GCSE Geography is taken at the end of Year 11 and is one of the most exam-heavy GCSEs, because fieldwork is assessed inside the written papers rather than as coursework. It covers physical geography such as hazards, landscapes and ecosystems, and human geography such as cities, development and resources. You can see how our GCSE tutoring works.
All three routes run three written papers and total 252 marks, but they divide those marks differently. AQA's papers carry 88, 88 and 76 marks, worth 35%, 35% and 30%. Both Edexcel routes use 94, 94 and 64, worth 37.5%, 37.5% and 25%. If your school enters for Edexcel, the first thing to establish is whether it is Geography A or Geography B, because the topics and the paper titles differ.
The three routes agree on the skills side, which is unusual. Each uses four assessment objectives, giving 35% to analysis and evaluation and a further 25% to skills and techniques. That quarter covers maps, graphs, statistics and fieldwork data, so we practise those as exam questions every week, working from past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE Geography Exam Boards We Cover
There are three routes here, and all three total 252 marks. AQA splits them 88, 88 and 76. Edexcel's Geography A and Geography B both split them 94, 94 and 64. All three award exactly 12 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar, and all three use the same four assessment objectives, with 25% of the GCSE for geographical skills.
AQA
Three written papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each, for a total scaled mark of 252. Paper 1 is Living with the physical environment, worth 88 marks and 35%, covering natural hazards, the living world and physical landscapes in the UK. Paper 2 is Challenges in the human environment, worth 88 marks and 35%, covering urban issues, the changing economic world and resource management. Paper 3 is Geographical applications, worth 76 marks and 30%, covering issue evaluation and fieldwork, and it has a pre-release resources booklet made available 12 weeks before the exam. Each paper mixes multiple choice, short answer, levels of response and extended prose, and geographical skills are assessed in all three. Twelve marks across the three papers go to spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology, weighted so that Paper 3 carries six of them. Students complete two geographical enquiries, and the school must submit a signed fieldwork statement.
Edexcel
Edexcel runs two GCSE routes and both are covered here, with the same mark split of 94, 94 and 64 for a total of 252. Geography A (1GA0): Paper 1 is The Physical Environment, covering the changing landscapes of the UK, weather hazards and climate change, and ecosystems, biodiversity and management. Paper 2 is The Human Environment, covering changing cities, global development and resource management. Paper 3 is Geographical Investigations: Fieldwork and UK Challenges. Geography B (1GB0): Paper 1 is Global Geographical Issues, covering Hazardous Earth, development dynamics and the challenges of an urbanising world. Paper 2 is UK Geographical Issues, covering the UK's evolving physical and human landscapes and geographical investigations. Paper 3 is People and Environment Issues, which ends with a decision-making section where students choose one of three options and write a 12-mark answer. On both routes Papers 1 and 2 carry 37.5% each and Paper 3 carries 25%, with up to 4 marks per paper for spelling, punctuation, grammar and terminology. The timings differ: Geography A's Paper 1 is 1 hour 45 minutes and its Paper 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes, while Geography B's Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes and its Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes. Both were extended for 2026 exams. The centre must also complete a Fieldwork Statement.
How Centaurus Helps GCSE Geography Students Excel
Route Confirmed Before Teaching
AQA, Edexcel Geography A or Edexcel Geography B. The topics and paper titles differ, so we establish which one applies before the first lesson.
Skills Practised Weekly
A quarter of the marks are for geographical skills, and they appear in every paper on every route. Maps, graphs and statistics are trained as exam questions, not as revision.
Case Studies Made Specific
All three routes require named case studies and examples. We build a small set your child knows inside out rather than a long list they half remember.
Fieldwork Questions Prepared
Fieldwork is examined in the papers and the school must submit a fieldwork statement. We prepare students for both the unseen and own-enquiry questions.
Extended Answers Structured
35% of the marks are for analysis and evaluation. We teach a repeatable structure so answers reach a judgement instead of stopping short.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
