About GCSE English Literature
GCSE English Literature is taken at the end of Year 11 and is assessed entirely by two closed-book exams. Closed book means students cannot take copies of their texts into the exam, so they need to know key quotations, characters and themes well enough to write about them from memory. Both boards set two papers totalling 160 marks, and both are untiered, so every student sits the same papers. They weight the skills almost identically too: reading and responding to texts, analysing language and structure, understanding context, and writing accurately. Analysis carries the largest share on both, at around 42% of the marks.
The important difference is how the texts are grouped. AQA pairs Shakespeare with the 19th-century novel in Paper 1, worth 40%, then gives modern texts and poetry 60% in Paper 2. Edexcel pairs Shakespeare with a post-1914 play or novel in Paper 1, worth 50%, and puts the 19th-century novel and poetry together in Paper 2 for the other 50%. The same four ingredients, arranged differently, so we confirm the set texts and the paper they sit in before teaching, working from past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE English Literature Exam Boards We Cover
Both boards run two closed-book exams totalling 160 marks, both are untiered, and neither sets coursework. Their assessment objectives are nearly identical, with analysis worth around 42% of the marks on each. The difference is the paper split: AQA weights Paper 2 at 60%, where Edexcel divides its marks evenly at 50% each.
AQA
Two closed-book written exams for a total scaled mark of 160. Paper 1 is Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel, at 1 hour 45 minutes, 64 marks and 40% of the GCSE. Section A is one question on the student's Shakespeare play, writing in detail about an extract and then about the play as a whole, and Section B does the same for their 19th-century novel. Paper 2 is Modern texts and poetry, at 2 hours 15 minutes, 96 marks and 60%. Section A is one essay from a choice of two on a modern prose or drama text, Section B is a comparative question on one named poem printed in the paper and one other from the student's anthology cluster, and Section C is unseen poetry, with one question on an unseen poem and one comparing it with a second unseen poem. All assessments are closed book and all are compulsory, with any stimulus material provided in the paper. AQA explains that its extract-based questions exist to support students in an untiered, closed-book context. There is no coursework.
Edexcel
Two closed-book written exams of 80 marks each, worth 50% of the GCSE, for a total of 160 marks. Paper 1 is Shakespeare and Post-1914 Literature, at 1 hour 45 minutes. Section A is a two-part Shakespeare question: the first task on an extract of about 30 lines, and the second on how a theme from that extract is explored elsewhere in the play. Section B is one essay question on a post-1914 British play or novel. Paper 2 is 19th-century Novel and Poetry since 1789, at 2 hours 15 minutes. Section A is a two-part question on the 19th-century novel, with the first part on an extract of about 400 words and the second an essay on the whole text. Section B asks for one comparison of a named poem from the Pearson Poetry Anthology with another from the same collection, and one comparison of two unseen contemporary poems. Texts are not allowed in either exam. Edexcel requires that 20 to 25% of the marks come from comparison questions. There is no coursework.
