About GCSE English Language
GCSE English Language is taken at the end of Year 11 and is compulsory for almost every student in England. It is built around reading and writing in equal measure: students analyse unseen texts, then write their own. The 9 to 1 grade comes entirely from the written papers. One thing is the same on every route. Students give a prepared presentation in a formal setting and then answer questions on it, and that assessment is graded separately as Pass, Merit or Distinction. It carries no marks and does not change the 9 to 1 grade, but it is compulsory, and the GCSE cannot be awarded without it.
The three routes differ in shape. AQA sets two equal papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks. Edexcel's English Language 1EN0 is deliberately unequal, with one paper at 40% and one at 60%, and its longer paper runs to 2 hours 5 minutes. Edexcel's English Language 2.0 uses two equal papers of 1 hour 55 minutes and 80 marks. Timing decides grades in this subject, so we rehearse under the clock with past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE English Language Exam Boards We Cover
There are three routes here and all three are untiered, so every student sits the same papers. AQA sets two equal papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks. Edexcel's English Language 1EN0 runs one paper at 40% and one at 60%, while English Language 2.0 uses two equal papers of 1 hour 55 minutes and 80 marks. All three include a spoken language assessment, graded separately as Pass, Merit or Distinction and worth nothing towards the 9 to 1 grade.
AQA
Two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks each, worth 50% of the GCSE, for a total scaled mark of 160. Paper 1 is Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing: Section A is reading, on one literature fiction text, and Section B is descriptive or narrative writing. Paper 2 is Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives: Section A is reading, on one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text, and Section B is writing to present a viewpoint. Each paper splits into 40 marks for reading and 40 for writing, and the extended writing question is marked 24 for content and 16 for technical accuracy. All texts in the exam are unseen. The third assessment is Spoken Language, teacher set and teacher marked, covering a prepared presentation of no more than ten minutes. It is separately endorsed and carries 0% of the GCSE, but it must be completed for the qualification to be awarded.
Edexcel
Edexcel runs two GCSE English Language routes and both are covered here. English Language (1EN0): Paper 1 is Fiction and Imaginative Writing, worth 40% of the GCSE, at 64 marks in 1 hour 45 minutes, with Section A reading an unseen 19th-century fiction extract and Section B a choice of two writing tasks. Paper 2 is Non-fiction and Transactional Writing, worth 60%, at 96 marks in 2 hours 5 minutes, with Section A reading two thematically linked unseen non-fiction extracts and Section B a choice of two writing tasks. English Language 2.0 (1EN2): Paper 1 is Non-Fiction Texts and Paper 2 is Contemporary Texts, each worth 50% at 80 marks in 1 hour 55 minutes. Paper 1 reads two unseen non-fiction extracts, including functional 19th-century texts, and is the only paper that assesses evaluation. Paper 2 reads two unseen fiction and literary non-fiction extracts from the 20th and 21st centuries. Both routes finish with the Spoken Language Endorsement, internally assessed and externally monitored, where students give a prepared presentation in a formal setting. It carries no marks and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
