About GCSE Economics
GCSE Economics is taken at the end of Year 11, and AQA designs the course to be taught over two years. It asks two big questions: how markets decide what gets made and at what price, and how governments try to steer a whole economy. There is no tier here, so every student sits the same two papers. You can see how our GCSE tutoring works.
The paper shape is simple. AQA sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, each worth 50% of the GCSE. Paper 1 is How markets work and covers content 1 to 6. Paper 2 is How the economy works and covers content 7 to 11. Both open with 10 multiple choice questions, then move to calculations, short answers and extended responses.
Economics rewards clear thinking more than memory. Students apply an idea to a real market, support it with data, then reach a judgement, and around 30% of the marks sit in that last step. At least 10% of the marks are for quantitative skills, so we practise percentage changes, averages and reading graphs, working from past papers and mark schemes.

GCSE Economics Exam Boards We Cover
There is one route for GCSE Economics on this page. AQA sets two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, each worth half of the GCSE, and Edexcel does not offer a GCSE in Economics. There is no tier to choose and no coursework, so the whole grade comes from the two written papers.
AQA
Two written papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, each worth 50% of the GCSE, for a total scaled mark of 160. Paper 1 is How markets work, covering Economic foundations; Resource allocation; How prices are determined; Production, costs, revenue and profit; Competitive and concentrated markets; and Market failure. Paper 2 is How the economy works, covering Introduction to the national economy; Government objectives; How the government manages the economy; International trade and the global economy; and The role of money and financial markets. Both papers open with 10 multiple choice questions, then move through calculations, short and extended responses, and each expects students to draw on the whole course rather than its own half alone. At least 10% of the marks are for quantitative skills, a calculator is allowed, and there is no coursework.
How Centaurus Helps GCSE Economics Students Excel
Board-Specific Topic Coverage
AQA 8136 has its own topic list and its own question style. Your child studies exactly what the paper examines, so nothing important is missed.
Graphs and Data
Supply and demand curves, price elasticity and cost and revenue data appear throughout the papers. We make sure students can draw and read them quickly.
Quantitative Skills Practised
At least 10% of the marks are for quantitative skills. We drill percentage changes, averages, totals and income, well past that mark.
Extended Answers Structured
The longer questions ask students to analyse and then judge. We teach a repeatable structure so answers reach a conclusion instead of stopping short.
Real Events Used as Evidence
The specification asks students to use economic issues from the last 15 years. Lessons use current examples from the start.
Classes in Your Local Time
Live sessions scheduled around your time zone, so no late nights or early mornings just to make a class.
