About GCSE Biology
GCSE Biology is taken at the end of Year 11 as one of the three separate sciences. It covers cells and how organisms work, infection and response, genetics and evolution, and ecosystems. Students sit either Foundation or Higher tier, and that choice decides which grades they can reach.
The paper shape is the same on both boards. AQA and Edexcel each set two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, worth half of the GCSE each, at Foundation or Higher tier. What differs is how the topics are divided, and how much practical work sits behind the course.
So we teach to the board on your child's entry. Lessons follow the topic list in their specification, we practise the data and graph questions that carry a lot of the marks, and we mark answers against the wording examiners expect, using real past papers from their board.

GCSE Biology Exam Boards We Cover
Both boards set two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks, each worth half of the GCSE, at Foundation or Higher tier. The topics are split differently, and so is the practical work: AQA lists ten required practicals, while Edexcel lists eight mandatory core practicals. Neither board sets coursework.
AQA
Two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the GCSE, sat at Foundation or Higher tier, with ten required practicals. Paper 1 covers Topics 1 to 4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. Paper 2 covers Topics 5 to 7: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology. Questions run from multiple choice and closed short answer through to open response.
Edexcel
Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks and 50% of the qualification each, and students must complete all assessments in the same tier. Paper 1 covers Topics 1 to 5, including Key concepts in biology, Cells and control, Genetics, Natural selection and genetic modification, and Health, disease and the development of medicines. Paper 2 returns to Topic 1 Key concepts in biology and then covers Topics 6 to 9, including Plant structures and their functions, Animal coordination, control and homeostasis, Exchange and transport in animals, and Ecosystems and material cycles. Calculators may be used, and there are eight mandatory core practicals.
