About AS Level Maths
AS Level Maths is the first year of A Level Maths. Students sit the exams at the end of Year 12, and many schools call that year Lower Sixth, while others call it Grade 11. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level. It suits anyone heading for engineering, physics, economics, computer science or medicine. The step up from GCSE is algebra, and it catches almost everyone. AS papers expect students to rearrange, substitute and manipulate expressions fluently, and the questions chain together, so one slip early costs the marks that follow. Calculus is also new at this level, introduced from first principles.

AS Level Maths Exam Boards We Cover
AQA and Edexcel set the AS as its own qualification, with the exams at the end of the year. Cambridge lets students choose which applied paper to take, and its Pure-only route is AS only, so it cannot be carried forward. OxfordAQA splits the AS into two units, and its second unit mixes pure, statistics and mechanics in one paper.
AQA
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks and worth 50%. Both papers open with the same pure content: proof, algebra, coordinate geometry, sequences, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors. Paper 1 then adds mechanics, covering kinematics and Newton's laws. Paper 2 adds statistics, covering sampling, data presentation, probability, distributions and hypothesis testing.
Edexcel
Two papers with very different weights. Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics at 2 hours and 100 marks, worth 62.5% of the whole AS. Paper 2 is Statistics and Mechanics at 1 hour 15 minutes and 60 marks, worth the remaining 37.5%. Everything in Paper 1 is assumed knowledge for Paper 2, so the pure work has to be secure before the applied paper makes sense.
Cambridge
Three routes, and students pick one. All three start with Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1, at 1 hour 50 minutes and 75 marks. The second paper is the choice: Paper 2 Pure Mathematics 2, Paper 4 Mechanics, or Paper 5 Probability and Statistics 1, each 1 hour 15 minutes and 50 marks. The Pure-only route is available at AS only and cannot be carried forward into the A Level. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India.
OxfordAQA
Two units, with a calculator allowed in both. Unit P1 is pure maths, 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks. Unit PSM1 is 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, made up of 40 marks of pure maths, 20 of statistics and 20 of mechanics. Together they make up the AS, which counts for 40% of the full International A Level. Exams run in January and May/June.
