About AS Level English Language
AS Level English Language is the first year of A Level English Language, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It is about how language actually works: how writers and speakers make choices, how language varies between people and places, and how texts are built. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
This subject surprises students. It is not about studying novels and poems, and it is not simply about grammar. It asks them to analyse real texts closely, name what they find with the right terminology, and then write about it clearly. That combination of technical precision and fluent writing is where most marks are won and lost.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we mark analysis and writing tasks the way an examiner would. AS Level English Language Exam Boards We Cover
Every board here pairs close analysis of real texts with a piece of writing of your child's own. The differences are in the detail: how many texts are analysed, how long each paper runs, and whether a comparison is required. AQA is the only board that asks for two texts compared in one paper, and Edexcel's international papers are the shortest and the most flexible.
AQA
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 70 marks, worth 50% each. Paper 1 is Language and the Individual. Students get two texts linked by topic or theme, and answer three questions: analysis of the first text worth 25 marks, analysis of the second worth 25 marks, then a comparison worth 20 marks. Paper 2 is Language Varieties. Section A is a discursive essay on language diversity with a choice of two questions, worth 30 marks, and Section B is a directed writing task on attitudes to language, worth 40 marks. Methods of language analysis run through both papers.
Edexcel
Two units from the International Advanced Subsidiary, each 1 hour 45 minutes and 50 marks, worth 50% each. Both are available in the January and June series, and both can be sat on screen instead of on paper, which no other board here offers. Unit 1 is Language: Context and identity. Section A is a comparative question on two unseen texts from the 20th and 21st centuries, worth 35 marks. Section B asks students to create a new text for a specified audience, worth 15 marks. Unit 2 is Language in Transition. Section A is one question on an unseen transcript of 21st-century spoken English, worth 25 marks, and Section B is a discussion question on the written language of the 19th and 20th centuries, also 25 marks.
Cambridge
Two compulsory papers make up the AS, each worth 50% of the AS and 25% of the full A Level. Paper 1 is Reading, and it runs for 2 hours 15 minutes with 50 marks. Candidates answer two compulsory questions, one in Section A and one in Section B. Paper 2 is Writing, 2 hours and 50 marks, with one compulsory question in Section A and a choice of three in Section B. Papers 3 and 4 complete the A Level. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India. Students can carry their AS marks forward into the full A Level.
OxfordAQA
Two units, each a 2-hour exam worth 50 marks and 50% of the AS. Unit 1 is Language and context. Section A is a compulsory analysis of two texts linked by a common theme, worth 25 marks, and Section B is one writing task from a choice of two, also 25 marks. Unit 2 is Language and society. Section A is a compulsory text analysis task worth 25 marks, and Section B is a compulsory writing task worth 25 marks. Both units are worth 20% of the full International A Level. Exams run in January and May/June, and units can be retaken.
