About AS Level Computer Science
AS Level Computer Science is the first year of A Level Computer Science, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It covers programming, data structures, algorithms, how computers are built, and how data is represented. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
This is two subjects in one. Half is practical, and depends on real programming skill built through repetition. The other half is theory, covering everything from binary and logic gates to networks and computer architecture. Students who enjoy one half often neglect the other, and that is where grades are lost.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification and programming language your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we mark written answers the way an examiner would. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all year.

AS Level Computer Science Exam Boards We Cover
AQA is a UK board, where the exams come at the end of the year. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses, with exams in more series. What they all share is programming tested under exam conditions, on screen or on paper. One board does not ask for real code at all. We teach to your child's exact specification and language.
AQA
Two papers, each worth 50% of the AS. Paper 1 is an on-screen exam of 1 hour 45 minutes. Students answer short questions and write, adapt and extend programs in an Electronic Answer Document. AQA issues preliminary material, a skeleton program in each supported language, and test data before the exam. It tests programming skill alongside content on data structures, systematic problem solving and the theory of computation. Paper 2 is a written exam of 1 hour 30 minutes covering data representation, computer systems, computer organisation and architecture, the consequences of computing, and networking. Paper 1 is heavily weighted towards programming and Paper 2 towards knowledge, so both need real attention.
Edexcel
Two units from the International Advanced Subsidiary, each 80 marks and worth 50%. Unit 1 is Principles of Computer Science, a 1 hour 30 minute exam available on paper or on screen. Unit 2 is Practical Programming and Problem-solving, a 3 hour exam where students program at a computer, the longest single assessment of any board here. This is a new qualification: Edexcel's first exams on it are in June 2027, so your child's cohort is the first to sit it. Units 1 and 2 run in June and January from 2028.
Cambridge
Two compulsory papers make up the AS, each 75 marks and worth 50% of the AS and 25% of the full A Level. Paper 1 is Theory Fundamentals, 1 hour 30 minutes, covering the first eight sections of the syllabus. Paper 2 is Fundamental Problem-solving and Programming Skills, 2 hours, covering the next four sections. One detail stands out: in Paper 2 candidates write their answers in pseudocode and are not required to write programming code, with an Insert provided. Exams run in June and November, and students can carry their AS marks forward into the full A Level.
OxfordAQA
Two units, each 75 marks and worth 50% of the AS. Unit 1 is Programming, a 2 hour on-screen exam available in C#, Python or VB.Net, where students write and test programs and record their answers in an Electronic Answer Document. It covers procedural programming, data structures, program design, and searching and sorting algorithms. Unit 2 is Concepts and principles of computer science, a 1 hour 30 minute written exam covering data representation, computer systems, computer organisation and architecture, and machine code and assembly language. Both units are worth 20% of the full International A Level. Exams run in May/June and January.
