About AS Level Chemistry
AS Level Chemistry is the first year of A Level chemistry, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It covers physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, plus practical skills, and it works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
The pace is the real challenge. Schools move through atomic structure, bonding and the first organic topics in a few months. Exam questions then ask students to explain and apply, not just remember. Very few marks come from simple recall, which is why the subject can feel much harder than it did at GCSE.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we fix the small errors in equations and units that quietly cost grades. AS Level Chemistry Exam Boards We Cover
Chemistry AS Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the content is set by the government and is nearly identical, so only the paper split changes. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses. We teach both families, always to your child's exact specification.
AQA
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks and worth 50%. Paper 1 mixes physical and inorganic chemistry: atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, equilibria, redox, then periodicity, Group 2 and Group 7. Paper 2 mixes physical and organic chemistry: the first six organic topics, from alkanes and halogenoalkanes to alcohols and organic analysis. Each paper has 65 marks of written answers and 15 marks of multiple choice. AQA sets six required practicals at AS and tests those skills inside the written papers. One note for families outside the UK: AQA has announced that AS Chemistry 7404 will no longer be available to UK overseas centres from 2027, so check the rules for your centre.
Edexcel
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, both sat in May or June of the same year. Paper 1 covers core inorganic and physical chemistry, from atomic structure and bonding through to amounts of substance. Paper 2 covers core organic and physical chemistry, including organic chemistry, analytical techniques, energetics, kinetics and equilibrium. Eight core practicals run through the course and are tested in the written papers. At least 20% of the marks across both papers are for maths at Level 2 or above.
Cambridge
Three papers, and all three make up the AS. Paper 1 is multiple choice, 1 hour 15 minutes and 40 marks, worth 31% of the AS. Paper 2 is structured questions, 1 hour 15 minutes and 60 marks, worth 46%. Paper 3 is the Advanced Practical Skills exam, 2 hours and 40 marks, worth 23%. Candidates take all three in the same exam series. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India. Students can carry the AS result forward into the full A Level, within the rules and time limits.
OxfordAQA
Two units, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 70 marks. Unit 1 is Inorganic 1 and Physical 1, covering atomic structure through to energetics, plus the first inorganic topics. Unit 2 is Organic 1 and Physical 1, covering equilibria and kinetics plus the first six organic topics. Each unit is 50% of the AS and 20% of the full International A Level. The AS is worth 40% of the final grade. Exams run in January and May/June, and units can be retaken.
