About AS Level Business Studies
AS Level Business Studies is the first year of A Level business, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It covers how businesses set objectives, market themselves, manage their money, lead their people and run their operations. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
The subject looks easier than it is. There is less content to memorise than in the sciences, and the ideas make sense straight away, so students often revise by reading. The papers then hand them a case study they have never seen and ask what the business should do. Marks come from using that case's evidence, not from reciting theory.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we mark case study answers the way an examiner would. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all year.

AS Level Business Studies Exam Boards We Cover
Two of these boards have just rewritten their Business qualifications, and the first exams sit in 2027. That matters if your child is in Year 12 now. We teach the exact version your school has entered, so no lesson time is spent on material that will not be examined.
AQA
Two papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks and worth 50%. Every paper is built on case studies: two of them, each followed by six compulsory questions worth 40 marks. Paper 1 covers Unit 3.1, what business is and how marketing and finance are managed. Paper 2 covers Unit 3.2, managing people and operations, and links back to Unit 3.1. This is a brand-new specification. AQA's first AS exams on 7137 are in May and June 2027, so your child's cohort is the first to sit it. All exams must be taken in one series at the end of the course.
Edexcel
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, worth 50% each and both sat in May or June. Paper 1 is Marketing and people, covering marketing, entrepreneurs and business start-up. Paper 2 is Managing business activities, covering business finance and operations and the outside influences on a business. Each paper has three sections: two data response questions broken into parts, then one extended open-response question that asks for a judgement. Questions are set in local, national and global contexts.
Cambridge
Two papers make up the AS, and there is no practical work or coursework. Paper 1 is Business Concepts 1, 1 hour 15 minutes and 40 marks, worth 40% of the AS: four short answer questions, then one essay from a choice of two. Paper 2 is Business Concepts 2, 1 hour 30 minutes and 60 marks, worth 60%: two data response questions, each in six parts. Candidates take both in the same exam series. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India. Students can carry the AS forward into the full A Level.
OxfordAQA
Two units, each 1 hour 15 minutes and 60 marks, and each worth 50% of the AS. Unit 1 is Business and markets. Unit 2 is Managing operations, human resources and finance. Both units use the same four compulsory sections: short answers worth 10 marks, calculations worth 10 marks, extended response worth 16 marks, then a longer extended response worth 24 marks. This is a fully revised qualification. OxfordAQA's first AS exams on 9725 are in May and June 2027. Exams run in May/June and January, and units can be retaken.
