About AS Level Biology
AS Level Biology is the first year of A Level biology, usually taken in Year 12. Students sit the exams at the end of that year. It covers biological molecules, cells, how organisms exchange substances with their environment, and genetics and variation. It works two ways: as a qualification in its own right, or as the first half of a full A Level.
Biology feels manageable at first, and that is the trap. The content is familiar from GCSE and the ideas are easy to follow, so students often read rather than practise. Then the papers ask them to apply those ideas to situations they have never seen, and to write answers in precise scientific language. Marks disappear in the wording.
We teach the AS as its own qualification, not a warm-up for the second year. Lessons follow the specification your child's school uses, we work from real past papers from their board, and we mark written answers the way an examiner would. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all year.

AS Level Biology Exam Boards We Cover
Biology AS Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the content is set by the government and is nearly identical, so only the paper split changes. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses. Every board here rewards the same thing: clear, precise written answers, not just correct facts.
AQA
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes, 75 marks and worth 50%. Both can ask about any of the four AS topics, which are biological molecules, cells, exchange with the environment, and genetics and variation, including practical skills. The papers differ in one way. Paper 1 ends with a 10-mark comprehension question on a passage your child has not seen before. Paper 2 ends with 10 marks of extended response questions, where the quality of the writing carries marks. The other 65 marks on each paper are short answer questions. AQA sets six required practicals at AS, tested inside the written papers, with no separate practical endorsement. One note for families outside the UK: AQA has announced that AS Biology 7401 will no longer be available to UK overseas centres from 2027, so check the rules for your centre.
Edexcel
Two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, both sat in May or June of the same year. Paper 1 is Lifestyle, Transport, Genes and Health, covering lifestyle, health and risk, and genes and health. Paper 2 is Development, Plants and the Environment, covering the voice of the genome, and biodiversity and natural resources. Nine core practicals run through the year and are tested in the written papers, one more than Chemistry or Physics. Edexcel Biology A follows the Salters-Nuffield approach, which starts from real situations and works back to the biology, and there is an alternative topic order for schools that prefer themes. Maths is lighter here than in the other sciences, at least 10% of the marks.
Cambridge
Three papers, and all three make up the AS. Paper 1 is multiple choice, 1 hour 15 minutes and 40 marks, worth 31% of the AS. Paper 2 is structured questions, 1 hour 15 minutes and 60 marks, worth 46%. Paper 3 is the Advanced Practical Skills exam, 2 hours and 40 marks, worth 23%. Candidates take all three in the same exam series. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India. Students can carry the AS result forward into the full A Level, within the rules and time limits.
OxfordAQA
Two units, each 1 hour 30 minutes and 75 marks, and each worth 50% of the AS. Unit 1 is The diversity of living organisms, which ends with a 10-mark comprehension question. Unit 2 is Biological systems and disease, which ends with 10 marks of structured questions that must be answered in continuous prose. Both units open with 65 marks of short answer questions. The AS is worth 40% of the full International A Level. Exams run in January and May/June, and units can be retaken.
